  • Vray fur grass testing

    Hi all -

I've been messing around with Vray fur and displacement methods of doing grass - here is the image I developed while working in it. It's mostly Vray fur, but there is a *bit* of displacement grass in there to help fill in some gaps. The leaves are Pflow with image mapped planes. I actually spent the time to setup 40 different leaves - but you can't tell in this crop

The background (including the grass in the background) is photographic. I was going for a sort of hyper-real/surreal kind of look and am happy with the way that turned out.

    Feedback is always apppreciated!

Great image, I also must try pflow!

The foreground grass matches the background colour really well, and the lighting is also very good.

        GREAT!

Thanks glorybound, exagero, and Timmeh! I have only the most basic grasp of Pflow, but it's handy for this kind of thing and it didn't take long to setup.

Gaah annoying! Why can other people get VrayFur to look so damn good and I can't even fill a square plane without it crashing?
            Must be karma.... or stupidity

                Thanks guys.

It took a quite a bit of playing around for me to get something I liked. In the end it's 3 Vray Fur objects with a single source object. Attached are the settings for the ground grass. I used the same 3 for the bench, just tweaked the parameters to neaten it up a bit. Some tweaks in post go a long way too though.

A simple grass material seemed to be all that was needed, but I used a Vray BlendMat with a glossier/shinier coating as well so I could adjust the "freshness" of the grass up and down a bit later on. I think I used one of DaForce's mats/maps as the base.

Also - using a slightly displaced grass mat on the source object helped fill in the gaps so I could use a bit less density in the fur. I rendered without GI to speed things up, but it was rendering with GI okay - just sloooooowwww.
