Here is my in progress design that I'm working on at the moment.



The house isn't even built yet either :P
Design is based around the WAR Audio Dianne speaker surrounded by 2 sets of the open baffle rhythmic /GR research sub woofers. So the raven r1 ribbon, two accuton ceramic mid woofers and 6 * 12inch servo controlled sub woofers per side.

Surround speakers shown here are just place holders, and so are the amps and such. (most likely to use nuforce kit) (audio is my other hobby)

Real wall is concave shape and ceiling has acoustic tiles on it. I am planning on having the whole system controlled with a ps3.

the woofer arrays you see are an open baffle design, they only operate below 60hz and so are therefore sub woofers. None of that information is present in the centre. Also given the inefficiency of an open baffle you need a lot of them to match the DB output of the main MTM part... So the middle speaker isnt too small at all its exactly perfect

One thing I can say is I am glad you are going 2.35:1 aspect ratio on the screen. If I might comment on something though? You have your center channel above the screen pointing down at the listening position. Although having it above the screen is better than below, I would recommend behind the screen. Use a perforated screen like the SmX screen and put everything behind it. Much better sound imaging you will find as the voices now come from the mouth of the actor and not above them. And I would reconsider all that glass at the left side of the room. You will get some nasty reflections of both sound and light off those folding doors that will muddy up your audio. You may want to have a lot of stuff showing but from a home theater perspective this is not necessarily a good thing. It will lower the contrast on the screen, cause reflections, and generally cause havoc with the movie watching experience. Dark and soft is a home theaters best friend. A black screen wall boosts contrast and cause the movie to be the focus of attention. Soft fabrics absorb some high frequency stuff and combined with wall treatments can make a HUGE difference in sound quality.


From a rendering standpoint I can not criticize since yours are way better than mine at this point but since I just built my own home theater I thought I would throw that out. But after all this is going to be your home theater and everyone is different, so do as you like. But generally speaking a bit of redesign can and will make for a much improved movie watching experience. I would become a member of the AVS Forum during this process. A lot of folks on their with great ideas and a lot of experience in the field.

I just updated the render with the latest version.

I will be putting the centre behind the screen now, but for the artwork i wanted to see it.

I also tried having some lighting under the rack, but it didnt workout.

There will be heavy curtains to close over the doors and the doors themselves are going to be very very solid, also the backwall will be heavily treated so reflections off the glass will go into that before they hit the listener. I know its not idea to have the doors at all but it wouldnt pass the waf test without it.

In any case the man who won best sound of the show at CES 2001 is involved in the project
