  • Hoi An - A quick environment fog animation test

We don't usually do animations. Somehow, non of our current clients are interested in animations, only still shots. But sometimes it's fun to try moving the camera a bit around. We wanted to test drive the new environment fog feature, so decieded to spice up an older project of ours. Keep in mind that the shot is about the fog, and the scene was never meant to be animated, so the site opposite the hotel is, well, only roughly modeled.

Here is a render of the original still project:

And a frame from the animation (done in half HD):

And finally a link to the video itself: Hoi An Hotel, VRay Environment fog test (Hosted on Vimeo)

The environment pass was rendered separately, but only to experiment with compositing. Frames were pretty fast, and the fog simply rulez. Hope you like it!

    Best regards,
    A.

Thats pretty good., Care to share some of your settings? I've yet to play around with the vray env fog.

        Aldaryn,

Do you have the video posted somewhere else. I can't seem to open it in Vimeo.
        Stills look good.

Really great - are the clouds an image map or created inside Vray aswell, if they are they look really fantastic :]

            Thank you all,

tricky, stevesideas, the settings are pretty basic, almost default. Only the height of the fog was raised to approx 30 meters above ground, and the distance was modified to make the fog less dense, but other than that its all default. I had the existing scene, and only put a single fog shader into the environment list, and everything rendered instantly fine. This is something great about this feature. Compositing was done in Nuke, and only minor grading was done on the volumetric pass (gamma and contrast correction) and some color tweaking on the color sequence.

MHenry, hmm, strange, can't you access the vimeo page at all? There is a direct download link to the uploaded video encoded with XVid.

Adam H. Stewart, nah, the clouds are just a simple bitmap. Although, the fog could be tweaked to produce clouds like this. Vlado had some very nice examples about this.

            Best regards,
            A.

That's the fun part with a volumetric shader that is capable to respond to the lightning conditions of the whole scene be it direct or gi light. You get those rays for free. (given that the conditions are optimal, here: bright sunlight and dense foliage)
