  • REDVERTEX - AQUAROSA 3D animation

    Greetings to CHAOSGROUP Comunity !
This is our last project, developed in February 2009.
It took exactly 4 weeks including rendering time to complete it.
It was made by 5 men 3D artists and 2 nice ladies in compositing.
The movie original resolution is HD720p/30fps.
It was made too long, because of clients requirement - 6':15" consists of 4':30" 3D animationd and the rest were live video shots.
This is the short version - 3':45"

Here is the link for download:

And here are some screen shots:

Really good! - my only crits are the wheels in the cars at the beginning beside the airport don't move, and the horses look a bit... robotic!

          very nice !

little question : did you use vrayscatter for the trees (aerial view)?
how do you deal with GI with the moving objects (cars)

          Thanks !

            Wow, great quality!

Wonder if the dog in the pic would fit in the garage though :P

I think its a very good animation - some really good shots there and I like the way there is something moving in every shot to focus on. Well done. It does have a CG 'look', but I don't really find that to be a problem. My main angst is with the soundtrack - its awful (in my opinion of course)!

Four weeks from start to finish is amazing. Did you guys have to model everything from scratch or were models provided?

Fantastic work - The vocal overaly was a little weird though, kinda re-education camp-ish.

Thank you guys for your kind words
                        Here are some answers:

@judderman - you are right. We missed the cars in that shot. About the horses ... the are manualy rigged and amnimated for 2 days. The guy that made them , just tried for the 1st time

@muoto - No Vray scatter. We had a foliage plan and we put them manually. About the GI. 1st we render the whole frame. Then we render additional pass with animation settings. For example: the asphalt and cars were rendered on a different pass. Tomorrow I'll post some pure renderings. Because you will see the big difference before post production. We worked with 2 nice ladies ... great with post production

@ruud3dv - the dog seem big, but it is not. The problem is the position of the dog. Because from that point we had a significant slope towards the garage door. It's probably just a fake eye illusion. It looks the same to me too

@tricky - I also prefere "Sweet and Lovely" from Brian Ferry .., but can't pay for it

@still garna - proxies. Almost every object in the scene which is duplicated is proxy (houses, foliage, cars, ppl, etc). Average time .... 1st we render IrradianceMap and then we had on average 60 min per frame. This include the necessary time for separate passes.

@jophus14 - all from scratch. 6 men 10h per day modelin and animating.

                        @schroeder - does it sound silly ?

                          goodness me!

There's something creepy about that development - perhaps its the music or the echoey voice or something but the prevailing sense is of a big brother type world ( a bit like the spaceship in wall-e) where people are de-humanised and actually end up turning into low poly people!

                          good:
Clearly well planned project for the time - clever use of mapping and other tricks to speed things up. Some great story-boarding too: fish under water, falling petals, etc..

                          bad:
Horses are silly - and I would say that green-screen people would do your animation more justice then that (frankly awful) low-poly rubbish.

I do agree that the horses are a bit silly, but I really don't mind the people. You have to take it for what it is - a CG animation of a huge complex done to a fixed budget (my guess, a very low budget compared to hollywood productions) and to a fixed (short) timescale.

Yes, it would be amazing if the people were all live action green screened comps, but then it will be something very different. The fact that the people are scaled and lit correctly (as they are in-scene) is great IMO.

About people - we don't have budget for green screen shooting. We have that experience, but it also need a clients will for the appropriate budget.

                              cheers
