  • Big chunk o' Ice

Here's a little materials test I've been doing for a new project involving lots and lots of ice... What do you think? For reference, the chunk is roughly 3.5x3.5x3.5 meters... The material is a FastSSS2 material using a very tweaked "Marble" preset (scattering changed from back to forward, changed the ior a little, changed colors and a bunch of crackle maps mixed together using Bercon and regular noise maps.) Lighting is through an HDR on a vray dome light and the BG is just a photo. The chunk has displacement through a combination of "crumpled paper" and Bercon noise.

    C&C more than welcome!

    Cheers,

    Jorge

interesting, but can't say it really looks like an iceberg.

Thanks for the replies! I know it doesn't look like an iceberg but it's not really supposed to - I just put it in water as it seemed a nice way to show it. It's going to be used in what should be deep underground (under-ice?) tunnels made entirely out of ice, I'm now dealing with that side of it and will post pictures as soon as I figure out correct dimensions for the maps (the tunnels are over 80 feet wide and 50 feet high!).

        Cheers!

ahhh. yes i can see it easier as being some sort of ice in a cave.

            nice job

hey, Nice job. if the intent is for a cave its way more appropriate, it looks good. If you dont mind thats a nice water. mind sharing your settings ive never really been able to get it to look that way. =P

i would say at the end it depends on your lighting situation ice picks up the properties of light and color fareley well... see below.

great job on the ice nevertheless.

            thanks

Thanks! As for the water, it's a simple material with a little displacement and smaller bump map, both using bercon noise map. Dark deep blue for the diffuse color and fresnel reflection at 100% with IOR 1.33.

As for the cave it's supposed to be very deep underground so the only light will come from objects inside it, I'm testing it out now and will post images when I get something I like. It's hard controlling how far you want the light to travel "inside" the ice as well as how much blue it should pick up which is really more of an artistic choice as there's ice caves that look totally white as well.

              Cheers!

edit: Here's a new image of the tunnel, had to tweak a lot and most of the previous material didn't translate at all into the new environment so I'm still playing around with it.
