  • (another) Farnsworth House

Yep, its yet another set of Farnworth House by Mies van der Rohe renders. This time with vray environment fog!

    some technical info:

-Grass (short, medium & long), clover and plantago major all scattered with vrayscatter.
-Trees are all made with Onyxtree.
-The total poly count comes to approx. 10 billion. 1.34 billion for trees, 8.4 billion for grasses, 270k for house, 550k for furniture.
-Renders took roughly 6 hrs each @ 2200px (IRR map & LC. Some I treated to the universal method)
-Rendered with vrayphysicalcamera, vraysun, HDRi environment
-VRayenvironmentfog was rendered as a separate pass and screened over in photoshop
-Final colour corrections made in Adobe Lightroom

saw one of those, the first one I guess, on arch daily yesterday. wondered why you didn't post it on the forums as well, and here they are
given the results I'd say it's well worth having another set of farnsworth house images to look at. they're all great, the fog just brilliant.

thanks guys, I did put the first one on archdaily for a laugh (the others weren't finished rendering at the time). I'm probably going to whore these images round the forums, but this is the one that matters

wow, easily the best set of Farnworth images I've ever seen, flawless. The morning light you've captured perfectly, no mean feat. Is the HDRi you used one of your own?

Nice work! The environmental fog is a bit strong for my taste, considering the current lighting condition. It would have been flawless if you had made it so it had just rained, and it was all steamy and such.

                        Son of a...

Those really are superb. Your trees and especially the grasses are outstanding, needs a second look they are so photorealistic.

thanks again, Pictor2, yes the HDRi was one of my own. The sky is just the HDRi directly visible.

how long did it take? bit hard to figure out as it was done in between jobs. Started it ages ago and glad its finally out of the way. I kind of did it in stages, first the building, then the grass and then the trees - got a bit carried away with the trees and grass so those bits took a lot longer than planned!

Steve all pics are on flickr, does the flickr slideshow link work?

i think the fog is too strong / does not work in some of the images...

in a few of them however it totally makes the image

fog might be the new lens flare eheh

How much render time does fog add to a render? (as a %?)

                              fog:

                              no fog:

final: (with a bit of colour tweaking)

I'm not sure it saved time, but I rendered the fog separately with the glass hidden and an override material (grey). Where the pure render maybe took 6 hrs, the fog pass was 1hr. When doing the fog pass I took the GI settings way down for speed. (Even tried rendering the fog pass LC/LC which was really quick but lost too much detail). For each shot, the fog density was linked to a falloff map set to object mode and referencing the camera - I found this quicker than using gizmos to control where the fog was.
