  • Happy Tree

This is a 3D version of a black ink piece I did years ago and they very similar in composition. The tree trunk, branches and accompanying plant life where modeled in Xfrog3.5. The 'Happy Faces' on the tree are instanced Vray Proxies placed utilizing a custom MaxScript. All the other plants where modeled, modified and then proxyed. There are approximately 120 unique objects in the scene and about 65000 objects instanced from them.

Final render was in vray 1.50 sp3a and took approximately 20 hours at a resolution of 4000x5200. Some color adjustments and a minor depth of field effect was added in PhotoShop CS4 utilizing the lens blur filter and a Z-Depth pass.

Fantastic image. I can't quit watching it. Do you know how many polys, including the instanced geometry?

        Nice image

Very colourful novel use of scattering

Heres something I did recently in a similar fashion, the original bottle has displacement, not sure how many copies. Done with Forest Pro.

No.. I've no idea how many polys.. But I didn't have any reservations when creating geometry.. Just the faith that vray would render it!

I'm not sure how to do an easy scene count as max returns the preview face count.

Great image Keith! I confess that at first glance I just looked at the thumbnail and thought it was "just" an abstract tree... It brought a smile to my face when I viewed the image full size and saw thousands of little faces smiling back at me. Great concept and execution - I love it!

1600 Pixel version is available.. just click in on preview image twice, you'll get to the full res version I uploaded...

Priad: I tried it with a bunch of different faces and it loses continuity when view as a whole, which is a big part of the image. It currently has four different smiles. The teethy smile being the least prevalent ( but very obvious ) and "the standard" smile comprising about 1/2 of the smiles in the distribution. Perhaps I should add one winky smile in there.. that's a good hunt and find item... like the smilie with the sunglasses on!
