  • Living room "studio" for fun

    Hello...

A little private project made during christmas holidays.
In my own opinon the rendering is done, but crits are very welcome:

I have tried with another background (w/o sunset) but it kind of made the picture more dull, so i'd rather go with this look.

    and a wireframe:

    Thanks!

nice work. The rug is the weakest part of the image for me though. it looks like a mat you place outside your front door to scrape the mud off your shoes. And your curtains are showing up too black on my monitor, especially the one on the left.

Updated the rug now, think it looks more soft and natural now?

Very nice image. Slightly soft, but I like that. Rug looks much better. Nice lighting and details

That's great. I also much prefer the second image.

It's eery too since I spent a big part of last week staring at this very same Carl Hansen catalogue as I modelled the CH_102 series for Ronen's ArchViz competition (mine - here - is black leather).

You really nailed the mood of the image!

May I ask how you went about doing the second version of the rug?

            Thanks!

Oh that looks correct, cool link. How did you make the pillows and leather look to used? Looks really good.

You wouldn't believe it, i just ended up using the build in hair & fur, rendering as geometry. So simple, takes like 5 mins. =)

I haven't managed to do anything good with Max Hair. So now I must give it another try. render as geometry seems to be the way to go - I used instanced geometry recently and it looked crap.

... I sculpted the cushions in Zbrush, reduced the polycount with the decimation plugin, and reimported back into Max. I read about this workflow in another forum recently and it turns out to be great. The decimation plugin produces very sharp detail, really low poly (I went from 15m to 15,000 without any visible loss of detail), and it saves having to bother with displacement maps and settings. If you have Zbrush (3.5R3), it's definitely one to try.

I do at work, but i am not sure it is that exact version. I will check, but is the decimation plugin something in that build or do i need to dl it from some third party vendor?
It looks really good, my guess was normal maps but it looked to good. I really need to see if i can archieve the look you got.

Yes short tut.. 1. Make a plane. 2. Make cuts, so the polys you dont want hair on, are beneath the legs of the table. 3. At the Hair & Fur WSM modifier. Set a length. Play with the frizzle etc. so haris look random. 4. Sub-object and choose faces. Select all, deselect polys under the legs. 5 Make sure rendertype is Geometry. NOTE: Everything over 90.000 made my max/vray crash on a x64 system with only 4gb memory.

Looks really good. I agree that the new rug is an improvement.

Nice work. The second rug looks nicer and softer. The dark curtains, the one on the right looks a nice gray and I can see the folds, but the one on the left looks almost pure black and is hard to read. My only suggestion for the scene would be to add something to the glass coffee table, maybe a little decorative sculpture or a magazine. Perhaps something with a bit of color sticking out of the vase in the back too

Thank you for your kind words - I want a colored cushion in the right side of the couch and yes there should be a little something on the table

Gotta get that curtain brightened, thanks again for your comments. Helpful

I like this image a lot. However, my eye keeps moving to the upper left side of a window frame because that appears to be what is in focus. I'd be interested in seeing a version with the focus more towards the middle and softness towards the perimeter.

@Jujubee - Can you please try to tell me how you want to achieve that? By moving the camera and trying to make the furnutire more center, than bottom right?

Anyway i corrected a few things, and we only had an old version of Zbrush, so i went with the Mudbox 2009 trial instead. No decimation master, just LOTS of polys =)

And black was better to show off the folds and wrinkles, though i still want white couches in my final i think:

Thanks a lot for the short hair tut. I'm going to try this asap.

And nice update on the sofas. Though in your setting, I think the white leather perhaps works better...

Sorry for taking so long to answer. The decimation plugin is built into ZBrush, but only in the latest version. It's quite a cheap app too, at less than $600 considering that standalone decimation plugins sell for upwards of $100 and they don't do nearly as good a job as this free ZBrush plugin does.
