  • Old style housing

Hi, here's a visual of a residential project in Yaffo, Israel. Client asked for a romantic dusk shot... This was modeled with SketchUP and also mostly textured inside SketchUP.

Then the model was exported to 3dsmax to be rendered with VRay. I used VRayScatter for trees and plans, gwIvy, and Batzal Roof Designer for the roof tiles.

    C&C is more then welcome.

Very nice, Ronen, Exactly what the client asked for, I'm sure.

It's amazing that you can do such detailed texturing in SU. SU never ceases to impress me.

I love the lighting and the mats. Can I ask what textures you're using? You own or from an archive?

Did you do the desaturated, hazy effect on the background trees in post?

      Thanks Bertrand.

Most of the textures are from CGTextures and with some work done on them. The stone is an Arroway texture.
For the haze / fog I used a ZDepth pass to mask out a white gradient layer (full white at the bottom and fades out to transparent on the top)
I then played with the transparency level of this layer to get it to what you see here.

I would love to do this effect with VRayFog but never tried that before… sure could use some pointers on how to get started with that.

I'm doing some more shots around the house, and will try DOF to get the hang of it more… now that I have the model finished to play with.

        Nice work!

Only comments are that the overall composition of the background into the scene needs work. The sky doesn't match the colour & lumnance of the 3d scene & this is a very important aspect when trying to get things perfect.

        All the best

When you exported the sketchup model out and then imported into max, what settings did you use for the export? Did you export by material? Sketchup models can be a nightmare inside of max.

I use the 3DS export by material... and i never get issues with my SketchUP models. It is really all about how well you model it.

Very cool texturing and nice work!
But the background does not integrate to the scene.

Hmmm... I feel the background (sky) works well and that the coloring is OK - can you be more specific?
how does it not fit... is the "fog" effect too much?

Yes probably it is the fog effect.
I think there are 2 points:
                  1. House has no fog beccause it is in the foreground.
And trees have fog because they are at the background. But I think there is needed some kind of geometry in the middle ground to form a transition. So it will look more realistic and spread on the volume than looking like added to the background or used a matte. It will look better if we can feel the transition of fog from less to more.
                  2. At this time of the day, in such a place with high trees, that area will be darker because shadows of trees would be darker. Assuming that we are looking towards west (as west will be the brightest sky at this time), we will see a bright sky in between trees but since we are facing the unlit side of the trees , trees need look dark and space between trees willl be darker.
But I think fog effect prevents this and make the trees have a whitish shade looking like illuminated.
I hope I could help as I was trying to analyse why my eye felt as "background is not integrated".
