  • The lamps

I'm trying to work my understanding of transparent (but not glass) materials such as lamp shades and light textiles.

So here is a first image. Same model right and left, same shading (material two sided) right: Vray sphere light - left: sphere object emitter
the material has no texture in the translucency tex slot

looking pretty good. I like the one on the left more. The falloff on the light is more pleasing to the eye, and the shading of the lampshade has a bit more 'texture' to it.

thank you Percy. I agree with you, the left one seems to be better.
Here is another test. same setup as earlier but now the lamp shade material is a standard vray mat with glossy refraction...... not really an option because it's much more longer to render... 1h5min (the first one was 24min)

a last test where I tried to introduce some transparency (texture in opacity map of the base shader)... but with a huge time increase (1h43min)

any chance you can share the file to let us noobs have a look at your settings/materials?

                Hi waaazoo,

                the images looks very nice.

The white wall behind the lamps with the ingrain wallpaper looks also nice. Any way you can told what texture you use for that? Or post the material?

                Thanks.

                  Hello,

Thank you for the nice comments

Here are the two last materials (white, and transparent white) with the map used.

For the wall it's a simple Vraymat (almost white) with a bump map

Vray does not like opacity mapped textures - it will always kill your render times.

personnaly i prefer the right one (Vray light). the red tinted circular shadow on the floor looks more logical to my eyes.
But you've a size difference between your 2 bulbs, si it gives different results.

                            Amazing job !

                              No pure raytracer does.
Turning bitmap filtering off, however, will speed up things considerably with opacity mapping.
