This was an internal development piece that we produced at RealtimeUK.
    http://www.vimeo.com/9498000

The team was approx 4/5 people, working over a couple of months.

Made in 3dsmax, rendered in vray, post in AfterFX.

It's a bit flickery in places, but we were on a tight deadline before we had to get back to paid work. Only just managed to fit it in.

Might see about re-rendering a few bits.

looks really great. I did not find the animation all that interesting but the cg execution is really good. I could see some noise in the dof though. What were the render times like?

I really like the CG execution.

I have to become comic book guy for a sec and ask this. What sort of research have you done on the sword fighting techniques? The red guy draws and goes into what seems a proper hasso stance, but his sword grip is really weird. I think his left hand should be holding the far end of the hilt. When wielding a katana the small finger on your left hand should have the tightest grip, and the power should be in the left hand, the right should just be guiding the sword. I'm not criticizing, i'm just curious. Kurosawa movies come to mind.

Randomly looked up your site yesterday & saw this.

It looks absolutely gorgeous, the rendering, modelling, texturing & post work are all spot on.

I'm not 100% sold on the actual action in it though... It just seems to be lacking a bit of 'power' as they fight. Also the shot where he moves his head from the sword under his chin looks very strange, the first time round I thought it was a glitch in the playback.

Having said all that, I'm being very flippant over what is clearly a shitload of top notch work. Especially given that it was an internal project.

              Great clip.
It looks like actual live motion clip.

Stellar work from realtime as usual. Care to elaborate more on the production process? Is it motion captured or hand animated? I find it hard to tell sometimes :s

shouldn't there be just a little blood on his sword at the end after he kills/wounds his opponent?

Noise? Where? Outstanding work. Sometimes it's ok to leave it as is. Do you really need to re-render anything?

Great work. Pat yourselves on the back.

                        Hi guys,

                        Thanks for all the replies.

First, yes there probably should be blood on the sword at the end

The whole take is one long Mo-Cap recording. We got 2 stuntmen to come up with the sequence, one of which is Matt Damon's body double or something?

So the action was down to them, sorry if it's not that interesting to some of you. We were trying to get a more realistic fight rather than too hollywood though.

It was rendered with a vray sun and HDRi, with Vray cameras, and GI. DOF and MBlur were done in the render.

                        THANKS!

                          That is quite nice.
My first comment would have been that there is a nice feel of strenght and weight of the characters... ( But as it is Mo-Cap.. I guess it comes with it...)

                          Their attitudes are great..

Render wise, nothing to say.. it is great... just plain great

                            Looks amazing, congratulations.

I'm very interested in which GI method / workflow you used with Vray to ensure you didn't get any flickering in the GI ?

Impressive as always... The two character are really "humanised" (thx to the mocap ) and the shaders too.
Really great work, i'm interest to see the character from zbrush (wireframed sheet maybe?)
                              i ll be back
