((UPDATED)) Updated to softer shadows from Vray IES

A series of personal work images using Peter Guthrie's new HDR image collection at http://3docean.net/user/paguthrie/

    I used 1725 Sun, 0743 Cloudy and 2003 Dusk

You can see 3000px versions at my Flickr page. http://www.flickr.com/photos/danieljhatton/

My aim was to practise lighting a scene using different lighting moods. Dusk, Clouds and Sunlight. I think I will be working with HDR this way from now on. Its a fluid and efficient way of working. Renders took around 2 hours each using DOF. Post Work is just Camera Effects and adding the Occlusion. Lights are Vray IES.

Not too shabby. The night images would be much improved just by turning on area shadows for your lights though. They're shadows are so sharp.

Percy is referring to the use light shape in Vray IES settings. I left the 'use light shape' off in the Vray IES params to get sharper lines from the lights. It allows you to render much quicker with it off as well. I will have a look at how it looks with it on. Render times will increase slightly but nothing too drastic. Sometimes I find that the shadows can be lost sometimes with certain IES files.

very nice work Daniel, I agree with Percy about the IES shadows - think it would look even better with softer shadows. If you edit the .ies file you can change the size of the light source to control the softness of the shadows.

handy tip by voxel3d that I keep coming back to time and time again to remember how to do it: http://www.chaosgroup.com/forums/vbu...236#post392236

Nice work, as I said on the other site, and very nice showcase for Peter's skies. I particularly like the cloudy image with the door.

Very nice. I agree about the shadows but otherwise nicely done.

              Very nice work, well done.
We don't see many irish people posting here.
I will have to get the finger out and start posting too, long over due.

Any clue of the work flow?

HDRI map in the reflective slot , and enviroment slot ?
              Soft shadows?
Seems like a long render time though.
May be I am spoilt at work with three machines to work with.
That might all change soon, and the it will be laptop.
              Any great renders well done.

              Phil

                .
Vray Dome light with the EXR loaded, reflective and environment clear.

2 Hour render with DOF at 4000px too long on 2 machines? You are spoilt.

PG I am looking at the lights now. Will post back my results.

Definite improvement. Some nice tips on the IES sizes and shadows, thanks guys! Render time wasn't really effected too much. Definitely worth it.

this is quality work, and the soft shadows make it even better.
