  • Riflefactory apartments :)

Long time no post. Most of the stuff posted here these days is so awsome it kind of scares me away

But here are a couple of pics Im happy with, so here goes. Its an old rifle-factory (!) being remade into an apartment building. Some of the apartments have a cieling hight of 4.8 meters! Wouldnt mind living there... Its not my design or anything, Im as always just a rendermonkey.

I used Peter Guthries butt-kicking hdri-s to light everything. The rendertimes go up quite a bit compared to vray sun/sky, but I think so does the quality.

    Crits and comments please!

I love the interiors - nice colormapping / tones! The exterior looks a bit "empty" and cold (though nice lighting)

      Thanks Valo!

I agree completely that the exterior is a bit empty... wasnt sure how to do that image. The client chose the view, and the foreground is just a parkinglot. I could have thrown in some more cars etc but then I would have hidden the building. If you have any pointers on how to make it more interesting Im happy to hear them! Same goes for the interiors - this was the first time I used hdri-s and although i like the lighting i think i may have made them a little too bright in post. Its a fine line between a bright and inviting interior and a too blown out image

I'm guessing you're Swedish, based on your nick.

Great renders, really lovely. Except the moiré on the first ones chairs.

I'm going to take a guess that this is from Eskilstuna?

Nice renders but a bit too bright for me.
The bed on 4th image looks strange there.

very nice renders! Ecept like you think, that they are a bit overexposed. You could maybe try to lower the overall brigthness in comp and try to add some photographic effects such as glow, DOF, and very subtle lensflare to add to the sunshine effect instead. Just look at some photograph to see what I mean. When the white becomes too bright it starts to glow.

for example, look at the glow in this picture:

                Thanks guys!

If I have the time Ill take another shot at the postwork in these - and try to control my impulses to push that s-curve just a little bit higher

jstrob - I think lensflares are usually a no-no, but maybe thats because they are often too strong? Some subtle DOF/glow could be nice. I´ll keep it in mind for my next proj.

pixela - The bed IS strange there. The bedroom is just over 2 meters wide, and there are two separete doors, one on each side of the bed... again not my design/architecture, but I think its a kind of funny solution in a small apartment.

Undersky - yup another swede here. "Kalle Eliasson" on animate.se. You are correct, the building is in Eskilstuna! The moire in the first pic is a result of me resizing the image in PS. Original is 5000 pixels wide and doesnt have this problem.

Haha, sweet. At first I thought I reckognized Kloster Kyrka in the last image, but couldn't really understand what angle it was from. But then I remembered Faktoriholmarna, so I'm guessing these apartments are around the area of Vattenpalatset?
Good to see Eskilstuna's getting some quality renders. When they rebuilt the crossing at the end of gågatan, they put up a previz-render. Looked like it had been done in Scanline by a highschool student...

Correct again Well, not sure about Vattenpalatset (ive only been in Eskilstuna a couple of times and dont know much about the place) but its on Faktoriholmarna. In the exterior, the smaller building on the left is the local brewery/beer-club if you know that one... nice place, one of the architects is a member and gave me a little guided tour - I havent hade the chance to try the beer yet but its supposed to be pretty good!

exactly! I should have specified, you can add a lensflare as long as we don't notice it is a lens flare. Just look at any big ILM, WETA or Digital Domain big effect block buster. They always have subtle lens flares but you don't notice them because they are so well integrated. And don't just press the lens flare button, you have to do it in layers and blur some of them more and gives them other shapes than the one we see in every computer graphic student portfolio!

Look at those iron man lens flare for example (far from your subject but I happen to be working on an Iron Man project): pretty subtle:

Lighting, rendering and modeling all look great. Very well done. Only thing that I don't like is no color on the walls, looks somewhat cold and sterile. Do most people not like colors on their walls? Maybe its just me. (I understand it was probably the clients request and its just my opinion.)
