  • Tadao Ando - Chicago House

Haven't posted anything in a while so here's a little personal project: a somewhat simplied version of Tadao Ando’s Chicago House. I did this pretty quickly so it's lacking in a few respects, especially the furnishing and interior, which was done so as to look "ok" from the outside but wouldn't quite work for interior renders. I might revisit it in the future. As always, very happy to hear your comments and crits.
Maybe the only interesting fact about this series is that the daylight pictures were lit only with an hdr map. No sun light.

A lovely set of images. Very photographic with nicely subtle use of DOF control. Very realistic level of saturation as well.

How did you find using only HDRI foir lighting? Never had much luck/time to play with HDRI images, particularly as a complete replacement for the vraysun/sky setup.
        Kind Regards,

Second vote on the dusk shots - Flawless, especially the first. The outside shots have something about them - maybe a little too underexposed or contrasty but that said it's a bloody difficult lighting condition to do. Congrats though - great work overall.

Brilliant images. The evening shots are particularly good. The balance between the internal lighting and the external fading light is perfect.

            Great textures too. Wonderful stuff!!

Thanks for taking the time to comment, guys. I too think I prefer the dusk shots.
Tricky: I like the control the VraySun gives. Especially if you must produce various times of day in a relatively short time. But I think HDRs win when it comes to the subtle quality of the lighting, especially when dealing with slightly overcast skies where the light remains quite directional. To obtain the very sharp shadows on the daylight pics, I lowered the map's gamma to 0.45. It's a pretty massive map, though, at 15,000 pixels wide. Not sure how that would work with a smaller map.

                    Great work congrats!

Have you created the HDRI your own or is it a library you are using if so can you please tell us what library is that?

Most of the HDRI's on the market are either morning or late afternoon shots but I can see that you have used a noon time shot.Would it be possible for you to post a low res version of that map so we can see the layout of the clouds and the height of the sun?

                    Cheers

I normally tend to use Peter Guthrie's sky maps, which are great and pretty much cover all times of day. I would warmly recommend getting a full set.
However in this particular case, I'm using a slightly larger map made by a friend of mine who has not yet put his maps on the market (but will do so some time).
It's not quite a midday sky but pretty close - more like mid-afternoon.

                        Congratulations very nice shots!
About HDRi wich res u use for it in light panel map slot ? 512 or more?
If it's Peter Guthrie maps, DO u use exr image (as Peter gives) or u convert it to hdr and use it with vrayhdrmap?
Thanks in advance and congratulations again
