    It's great!

Altough I'm confused about the wavy things in the windows. Are these reflections or what is it supposed to be?

Also the pillar in front is blurred a bit wrong, is it done in post too? It looks like the background near the pillar is also blurred the same amount as the pillar itsself.

    regards,

It's nice but would look a heap better without the DOF. It makes it look like a small scale model. Film makers who used table top models used to curse DOF as it gave away the scale of the objects and yet today we find everyone crazily rendering it back in.

My 2 cents anyway. Besides that all, I think it looks great.

Looks great! Love the oil drums. I agree with grassynoel, it would looka lot nicer with some deoth of field in it. You have some in the foreground, but that looks like a photoshop blur rather than dof. You should be able to use the multipass feature in max to get DOF with Vray free. Also, one thing that is bugging me is the volumetric from the lights. I think you should use an exponential falloff on them, they need to be much stronger near the source. Again, now it kind of looks like a photoshop effect. I think if you do those two things it would be a killer pic.

          NO DOF!!!!!!

The scene has a great feel to it, but the DOF makes me think a big finger is about to come down and rearrange the drums

Yes I DID say NO depth of field. I've been misquoted. DOF kills a lot of good artwork.

thanks for your comments guys. i'll try ruducing the dof. all of the effects were faked in PS. i guess i'm still confused about when to use dof and when not to....some say use it and others don't

                thanks

They should put a label on DOF: "handle with care"

I think it's only good for rendering small objects, so they really appear to be small.

Sorry, but i still disagree. I think the DOF doesnt look good because it was faked in photoshop (and not very well). I think an image like this could do with a little bit of DOF personally, but i guess im the minority on this one. Ah well, still a very lovely image.

what this scene really needs is some fog/mist to give it that cold night on the lake feel, with a hint of a distant shoreline.

Dont know if it helps but I am working on a personal project where everything is meant to look like a small model

                          http://www.chaoticdimension.com/foru...pic.php?t=2846

There have been some great suggestions on how to create DoF faster, but not so much better.

I seem to remember a trick from the guy that does Lots of Robots.
If I remember he rendered Z-depth or something like that and used it to make the DoF in photoshop, worked pretty good.

Excellent job portraying a weathered dock! (Any port in a storm, eh?) It has obviously been exposed to nature's corruptive elements, but the windows look like they were installed yesterday. Perhaps a layer of pond scum would make them fit into your scene more, maybe break one of them. Also, your lamps/lights - turn one of them off?

                              Hope this helps...
