  • NEW renderchallenge ...for hdri and matte objects

OK, Christian Bloch asked me if i want to drive a new challenge... he had a nice and interresting topic: the usage of hdri images with reflections and for lighting. I think it's worth to look at his image (rendered with lightwave)

Here the direct link to the challenge : http://thechallenge.n3.net ..follow the link to blochi's scene or use http://hdri.cgtechniques.com/~blochi

I thought it's funny to put some real model into his scene:

looks nice but there is a visible problem with the matte object.. i can't hide it completly..can someone help me with that crap?

Nice render, i've made some try too
for the matte object did you try the mtl warpper?
if not put a mtl warper upon your matte/shadow material and put the alpha down (0.3 or less)

I'm new to hdri. Which hdri map goes where and what are the settings for each in vray. I know this is a stupid qustion, but you have to learn somehow! Thanks for the help!

I really want to learn this!

You put the BG image into the max render enviroment slot and the hdri Spherical or angularmap into vrays enviroment override slot... that's all.

I use a vray mat wrapper to receive shadows and in this case GI.

          What matte object?

What matte object do you refer to?

I think the front edge of the table shows it

Is the top of the table maybe blurred more than it should be by the matte object?

Just a thought, a map of that table top could be used to blend gloss values or annissatropic on the matte object.

i have problems with my glass:

i don't know exactly why, but it seem so that any transparent vraymtl needs a 3d light to become bright enough and really transparent. .. i don't like the vraymtl anymore

The reflections are also wrong (to strong) and this is maybe the reason why refractions looks too dark... btw, raybounces 10!

maybe someone else can test the scene, because i think this scene is marking the border of vray. ..(like sibenik does, until vlado have checked the renderer together with the scene)

i cant get the background to line up with the camera at all.

is there any specific secret to lining it up?

You need to add the mentioned lens parameters to get right, I dont remember wich...

                            @rerender
very nice, i like your shadows
i only get weak and inaccurate ones
                            how did you achieve them?
is it only the hdri map?
                            if yes, what settings?
