  • Moon displacement test

    Hi everyone,
This is a scene I am working on with Vray displacement, some images I had of the Moon and a sphere. Nothing extraordinary really, but I think it'd be good enough to use for a background.
Haven't got the material and lighting right so I'll keep working on those. Might try to work on the displacement too.

    Any comments are welcome.

Psy: I hope you don't mind I used your vray ftp, I don't have any webspace myself. Thanks

    Cool

One thing though , looks backwards, I think the round areas should be craters.

I agree with ReRender. They shouldbe craters. And mighty deep craters too. I don't know how realistic you're trying to achieve here, but there needs to be more displacement variation in terms of the heights of the craters. Eg. the biggest round craters need to be the deepest and the highest.

Nice work though. Looking forward to seeing to finished image.

No problem, its there for a reason.

I think it's coming along nicely, I agree with sc and RErender as well, they need more depth to be craterlike. But it's coming along nice so far.

Forgot I hadn't inverted the image, so I think this should look a little better.

I'm using an actual map/image of the Moon, but I don't think it's giving the best displacement effects. I'll probably try to make one in photoshop that might give better results, using the other one as a guide so I can keep a similar topography.

          Thanks for the comments

there you go. Much better. The only thing missing now is a slight variation in the colour of the surface. I recall (from gazing up at the moon from my crappy telescope) that some areas of the moon are slightly lighter/darker than others.

            Good work.
