  • Pawson - Plain Space

A quick lighting study, inspired by John Pawson's Plain Space exhibition at the design museum in London (its still on I believe, I haven't been over to see it though sadly)

The main floor texture came directly from dinesen (I can't share it, sorry), both timber floors are made using brix, which has become indispensable for things like this. Rendered as always with Vlado's universal method, and the final images are pretty much as they came out the vrayFB. I added the slight glows to the lights in photoshop, unfortunately vray 2 beta 2 wasn't out when I rendered them!

    Great images peter,
The 8th one is my favourite, just a couple of questions, what type of light are you using on ceeling lamps, maybe ies(?) and what are your average render time(?).

    All the best for you.

vrayies for the spots, with a color temp of 4000k. The lights under the benches are vraylights set to rectangular and with a color temp of 4000k again. The outsude lighting is a vraylight set to dome with my 1224 hdri sky. For the lights at the door, i cheated a bit and just put invisible rect lights facing the wall, it gave the same effect as a translucent panel (see attachment).

Each render took about an hour, but then there were 3 workstations working away using DR! For things like this, I usually don't bother spending any time trying to optimize irradiance maps etc. I just let it render overnight and try to mentally move on to the next project!

            Hi Peter,

Just posted in evermotion. I think you rly nailed down the composition and color warm/blue balance. Beautifully smooth.

I was wondering if you could share the IES spot light file. Dont have anything so smooth.

            Cheers

sure, just change the extension back to .ies

Its just a standard erco ies, but with the dimensions of the light fixed so that you get soft shadows. For some reason a lot of ies files have negative values for the size, you just need to make the positive.

EDIT: this is the post that helped me figure this out http://www.chaosgroup.com/forums/vbu...nd-area-shadow I tagged it with IES because I keep going back to it!

                Thanks for sharing Peter!

                Great info.

I remember that topic now. As i dont have much interior requests i tend to never use ies lights.

                Thanks again buddy.

Good renders and always. Your render style fits to John Pawson`s architecture
Can you say something more about your clear AA and GI settings and time of renders ?

                  cheers

The wood textures came directly from the manufacturer so I can't share them I'm afraid.

Thinking about trying a little movie of this space, need to plan out some camera moves though, and try and find a point for it!

and if anyone has any cool ideas please do share, i'm out of my depth when it comes to animation. I was thinking about playing about with the lighting, and some simple short camera movements.

                            Looking foward to watch that!

How much time per frame atm and which res will you go?

How about making some artificial light go off and on in some particular moments? That would be cool imo!

                            Good luck

thanks for the ideas, i was thinking along those lines too, maybe a sort of timelapse effect too, going from day to night and then turning the artificial lights off at the end. Been done before, but you have to start somewhere!

That little test was 1280x720 and between 2 and 5 mins per frame.
