  • Chronicles of Nerm Stills

Here are a few stills from the animated film I'm doing, 'The Chronicles of Nerm.' I took about a year off from working on the animation to finish up my first live action film, 'James vs Reality (shameless plug: http://www.vimeo.com/15135199), but now I'm back on Nerm.

I've been working on this animated short for almost six years now, and I'm finally able to see the light at the end of the tunnel. I'm hoping that in a year or so, I'll be able to wrap everything up on it. I have a few celebrity voices on it, including Zoe Bell (one of the leads from Tarantinos Death Proof and a few other things).

These are all stills from the actual animation.

besides the renderings, quality,etc....., it's very impresive to me that one person can do all this and keeping your movie alive after 6 years and 1 year coming...good for you!!!
I've seen pieces of your movie around in different forums so my question is how you keep consistency wih all the different versions of Vray that I have being using thru this journey?.
about the script, do/did you refine your script thru the years or you wrote it and you moved to production mode?....in the way I am for sure I woulnd't finish it because you always want to improve what i did, specially if you are working for so long in the same project.

Congratulations and I'm looking forward to watch your movie

I went and did a live action film (with awesome CG creature effects), now I'm back on working on Nerm. These are a bunch of new stills from new scenes in the film, showing some of the new sets that were created, new level of quality (went and updated all the lighting and compositing) and numerous other things.

Thank you. How do I keep consistency with different versions of VRay? VRay hasn't changed that much that consistency has been a problem.

I outlined the entire story right off the bat and started doing all the models for it for a few years. Before casting, I went and wrote all the dialogue and nailed down the script. Now that all the voices have been recorded, I can't evolve it anymore. In the 2'ish years since that, I've become a much better writer and wish I could go back, but I can't! But it's still going to be a lot of fun and hopefully an entertaining short.

I got the same scene rendered with different versions and I got some variations, specially in glossy surfaces (from 1.0. something to 2)
on top of the personal satisfaction to accomplish it....What do you expect from your movie..Is it an start point for something bigger?
could you share some info.. how many assets you built for it? how big is the world that you have created? textures, rendertime, did you get help from studios to process the renderings(farm)?
maybe too many questions...I'm trying to imaging all the process for that type of solo project that you have in your hands.

The film should do very well in film festivals (from what I'm seeing in festivals now), and festivals can be a really good way to get exposure for a filmmaker, to get funding and whatnot. So it's hopefully a step towards getting other future films made.

I have six sets about about 12-15 characters made for the film. Some are smaller background, some are more 'hero' models that are more detailed. Those six sets are all strung together, making a few blocks in a city, plus the interior of the bar. I don't have any help, everything is being done by just me (aside from my fantastic voice cast). So right now, I'm only rendering on my home computer.

I've been creating shots inside the bar in my Chronicles of Nerm film for over a year now. With all of the bar scenes finished, I'm moving out to my Main Street set! I've spent the past few weeks getting the set up and running, getting the lighting right and getting characters set up in the scenes. Here are two test animation shots showing the new environment I'm working in.
