  • Photo-Duplication

It is slow at work right now, so I decided to exercise my brain a bit

Found a stairwell photo here a while back that caught my eye:

    Decided to attempt duplicating it:

I think I blew out the highlights a bit, but don't want to spend the extra 45 mins playing and re-rendering to fix it

Got about 4 hours in it including textures and model.

3DS Max 2011, VRay 1.5 SP5, Baked Gamma Workflow, and finally Photoshop CS5.

Here are some of the progress images:

Did you just map the image onto a plane and render it...?

      Nice job.

        The handrail in wrong......ha ha
        Nice work.

For a little extra detail maybe drop some maps into the reflection slots.

Imo had more contrast to your image. The shadows in the photo are much darker.
The browns/ yellows, in general, are stronger/darker in the photo. Also the blacks - your look a bit too grey.
I think the textures and the perspective are spot on.

          Cheers

I think I have caused some confusion for you CA. I got a similar reaction at CGArchitect

You have to visit the arch daily link to see the original photo, since I didn't want to embed the original photo here without permission. Plus Arch Daily is a neat site to visit for inspiration anyways

Thanks for the tips and comments!

I'm amazed how you could have so perfectly eyeballed the proportions. The geometry looks completely undistinguishable from the photograph.
If you want to push it one notch further, though, I would use some hand-painted displacement on the cast concrete. Look at how some of the bits are protruding slightly.
