Well, actually my first GI scene was way worse (without even considering that GI was still a baby in the rendering world)...

      1. Try to give some depth to your scene: put a background AND add shadows.
      2. Play with some light coming from outside.
      3. The chrome table is a little bit too postmodernist for your "decor".
      4. Those squares at the right: are those mirrors? windows?
      4. The perspective is like a shaquille o'neil view of the world. Place you camera in a more standard height.
      5. Make your central window a little bit bigger in order to create something more dramatic.
      6. The vase: just take it out.
      Oh, and 6. Keep learning!!

Yes, more shadows and light dynamics in general would improve the picture a lot.
I would also reduce the saturation of the floor and the walls.

for your first attempt i think its good but you do need to learn the concept of vray and what it can do for you.
do some tutorials, this one is probably the best,
