I made this test scene (SketchUp) and was using it with the lowest settings (renders under a minute each) in order to try out different setting options. Eventually I figured out how to add a background environment.
After playing with the quick renders I bumped up to the mid-quality settings resulting in the attached renders. In the attachments the water was given v-ray properties but other materials are all just the sketchup ones. I did use a bump image on the water but it isn't very apparent -- I must tweak more. I think the low-poly people from FormFonts are quite satisfactory for this kind of presentation -- they "fit in" well to me. I'm going to have to start collecting suitable background images -- right now my options are limited to a few I already had.
