I really like the fog fade and the ice you've got in the 'red' liquid - any chance you could let us know your material settings for both? (or even upload them??)

I also, like the packaging in the last image.

One thought on some of the images, they might benefit from a more dramatic view, with some Depth of View? - just a thought

            Hi Guys,

Thanks for the positive coments. Sorry I haven't replied, the last few days have been very busy. I am also trying to get a website together for the renders. I have so many questions to ask too. Just not enough time!

            Best regards,
            Gavin

Jean-Paul - I mapped the decals on the Black Bean render with standard cylindrical mapping. However, I couldn't get both labels to work on the same object, so I split the bottle just below the top decal. (You can just see the line.)

magnatizerr - The setting for the glass and red water are pretty much exaclty as per the standard glass from the material library. I find that the caustics settings make the main difference to getting the right look. I'll try to upload the materials later today.

Micha - Everything that I know about VfR comes from your tutorials. Thanks very much for putting in the work! Your portfolio is great.

              Best regards,
              Gavin

                Micha,

Maybe you could answer a couple of other questions?

                1) I tried really hard to get the decals right on the Pastiglie render by incorporating them into the disfused base material. However I could never get the image strong enough. In the end I had to add the decals to their own separate surface just in front of the difused base. Is this the only way?

                2) I also tried realy hard to do a bump map onto the surface of the lock. (Lockwood) I gave up in the end because I couldn't work out how to position it.

                Thanks,
                Gavin

                  1) I can not see the decals at your Pastiglie renders, but I'm a friend of cuted offset surfaces. For example your bottle images: I would duplicate the bottle surface and cut the decal surface and move it a little away from the bottle. In the past, I have not done so much decal work. Only a few times and it was working good (workaround the known bugs). At my projects I used a planar projection mapping to place the decal.

                  2) Most my bumps match with the texture. If you like to use a bump for the brushed metal, than you can use the same texture like for the reflection filter color and it match.
But for general visible placement of bump: I use a image browser for selection of my textures (copy texture path from image browser and paste at material). It's very quick done to disable the "plugin" and jump to "basic" of the Rhino material properties and past the texture path there. The rendered viewport show the bump texture. If I finished the RCM mapping manipulation, than I jump back from "basic" to "plugin".

I must admit - after many experiments of trying to place decals, I found that this is the only consistent successful method of doing it!?

As a product designer, decals are vital for me so I'm hoping it will get better with future releases? (especially the placement of multiples on one surface!)

Remember, if you use an alpha map for transparency you don't have to 'cut out' the surface - this will help when you want to update/change the decal.

yep, I do this this way also if I have multiple decals on a single surface.

Gavin, do you work with gamma 2.2 output? It's a little bit tricky, but is it worth. You can find some discussion about it in the last time and an user tutorial by Gijs - linear workflow (LWF) ... .
