Try making the glass translucent. Turn this option on and see what happens.

I tried to set up a scene similar to yours. I'm not used to working with standard MAX lights together with VRay so I used a VRayLight instead. And it worked perfect both with and without caustics turned on.

So try to use a VRayLight and see what happens then...

BTW: I'm not sure if you know, but you don't need GI at all when using caustics - caustics work even without GI.

Translucency is intended for materials such as wax, milk, skin etc. There's no need to use it when creating glass material, I believe. Since glass material is not translucent, it is transparent.

everything is ok without caustics, but that is not the solution, maybe must be tweaked glass material? translucensy makes that glass-box totaly black, i never used translucensy, don't know how to use it... will try to read some tutorials

Now I got the Direct light with VRay shadows to work, I set all parameters of everything as it is in your screenshots and it renders here with a perfect shadow, no problem at all. Maybe there's something wrong with those of your settings that you didn't post?

(I'm using VRay 1.09.03h Demo, MAX 4.25, WinXP.)

what is the strange white lines on the rear of he 2 smaller sphere?
i think u r using incremental add to current map and forgot to reset it, that's why ur big sphere doesnt cast shadow on the glass

That's caustics effect coming from the upper edge of the glass wall. I experienced this too with my test scene
