  • Interior Renderings (C&C Appreciated)

Here's a couple of interior shots of a quick one-week vignette we were asked to do for school. It's supposed to be a fully functional, completely inhabitable living space occupying no more than 1000 cubic feet.

    Comments and criticisms welcome.

(PS - this is my first experience with Vray)

i think it lots awesome, very good work. the living space you designed is very simple, fully functional. less=more. good job. can you please share your settings? maybe saved as a file? or describe it? i'd like to check that out if i may.

        Geoff,

        Renderings are fine....
The thing I like the most however is the architectural concept you show us.
I like it that everything in the space can be put away in 'drawers' leaving just 'space' when all lits are closed.

To make the concept even stronger I would use more saturated colours inside all those drawers to contrast with the sober grey/white space itself.
By opening a hidden compartment ,this will bring out a different and surprising colour into to the open space...

The use of those colours for the inside of the 'cupboard spaces' would make opening them quite an experience.

Some minor comment: i think the kitchen needs some attention concerning the height of the working tablet.

Also it is very nice to see that your college promotes contemporary architecture. A lot of architecture schools in the US stick to that 'classical, post modernistic' thing that we Europeans aren't fond of.

Keep up the good design work! I bet this project got you some good grades.

BTW. This project is very nice on the conceptual level.
Have you thought about posting it on www.pushpullbar.com ?
It would be nice to go in debate on it.

        regards,

Thanks for all the kind words everyone ! All of the feedback is very useful and well-taken.

kwisten - I'm a huge fan of your work and it's a thrill to have you commenting on mine! RE: contemporary versus PoMo or classical work - I would say that is probably the biggest advantage of going to school in Chicago. The city itself may have a fallen a bit behind when it comes to cutting-edge architecture, but, the schools themselves seem to be still trying to turn out individuality and new aesthetics.

Now, as far as the actual renderings go: the settings were just slightly modified versions of the default visopts that come with Vray SU (I can't provide any more information than that because I lost the visopt file I had made in a whole XP -> Vista -> XP debacle). Most of it was just point-click-and-pray! The one thing that I do remember tinkering with was whether or not to use RGB color correction. The scene was quite dark when I used it the first time so I turned it off; sadly, everything was completely washed out when I did that and you couldn't even tell that the walls were covered with individual panels. So, I turned RGB CC back on and just dropped the opacity on the glass (standard SU glass) down to 10-15% (if memory serves).

I was considering posting this on PPB but it's a tough crowd there and I know had better have my s**t together before I put it up

          Thanks everyone
