  • Matt's Jewelry Gallery

Here's a scene I've been working on. It's a simple light box style environment. I don't think that render times are too bad. Any help, or tips for improvement are definitely welcome. The piece itself is not for production, only for rendering. Thanks.

Edit: One thing I would like to improve is the jaggedness of some of the reflections. I'm not really sure what causes some of them to be nice and smooth, and others to be jagged.

First of all good render. Nice and simple. For the jagged reflections you should check you mesh as that would cause some to look smooth and some not. It might be easier to specify mesh through maximum edge length (which would need to be quite small in this case). The render times seem alright, but could probably come down. If most of that is due to antialiasing settings then I think your fine, but if those are normal than you may be able to speed things up a bit. Its best to post your settings if you want specific help. Right now i'm only speculating. Good work and keep posting progress

Hey, thanks for the reply. I'll take a look at the AA settings and also take a second look at my mesh. I managed to get the render time down to about 7 minutes by turning on "Use for Glossy Rays" on my LC, but the reflections suffered in doing so. I'll try to post my settings sometime today. Thanks again.

OK, here's the link to my scene. I figured I would just post it so that maybe I could learn a little from others messing around with it. The .3dm and the map used for the ground plane are in a .rar file. Here's the link.

          Nice image.

... try sub-pixel at the color mapping options. Helps a little. Jagging edges at high contrast edges are standard calculation problem of render engines. If you use "clamp output" than you get 8bit output instead 32bit, but the jagged edges should be complete gone.

I added the emerald ring. It's a work in progress, but it wasn't too awful bad, so I posted it. I need to fix the transparency of the stone, and the reflections in the metal.

The emerald ring is quite nice. I like the design as a whole...very minimal, very simplistic. The rendering is pretty nice as well, but just needs that little bit to put it over the top. Quality wise the rendering is 95% there, but as far as the content of the shot it seems a bit static. Maybe a different camera angle, or having multiple rings and playing with one in the foreground and another in the back (some nice DOF of course). Also just as a suggestion, maybe adding some caustics would be nice. It may bring out a bit more of the stone as well as play off the ground surface as well. Its looking real good, so have some fun and play around.

How long did it take to render? What are the material settings? what were the options settings?
                  P.S. I'm new

It took about 2 hours to render which is absolutely too long, but that's probably something I had out of whack. The gold is a modified version of the gold that Micha had posted (thanks Micha) and the stone was just a green tinted glass with a slightly transparent map applied to it for the inclusions. There are many things that need fixed on the render, but after it finally got done, I had to post it. The environment consists of a simple studio hdri.

I updated the starter kit: use LC option "use for glossy rays" and use GI IM+LC will bring max speed.

                      What computer did you use?

Thanks Micha. I have to say though, the model makes the render in those skull ring ones. Wish I made those models... :'(
