  • Puma Shoe

    Hi,

Last week I started modeling this shoe, it's part of a design visualization course in Argentine's university (FADU) with the national institute of industrial technology (INTI).
I chose this model, because it has all kind of elements that show both rhino 4 and vray for rhino potencial.

    Hope you like it.

      Hi Laborda

Great work, I read an article last week about Puma design saving the company from bankrupt.

      Does puma also used Rhino?

      Bye

        Re: Puma Shoe

There are actually a number of large companies that use rhino allot. I would put it about 80% that puma uses it. I know Nike and Adidas use it. Now all we need to do is get them using V-ray. ;D

        Great render by the way.

Thanks Travis Serio and Dolmar !

Paraglobal: At the moment I'm in charge of teaching modeling and rendering with this model, unfortunately I'm not part of the Puma's design team ( already ). The course is about sport shoes design, and I'm in contact with other people that teach other modules of the course, and know a lot about specific technology, I'll ask them if they know what software uses Puma, but as dalomar said, a lot of companies use rhino.

            Hi Laborda

If you are working in shoe design can you give me your opinion about a how many times do you have to make patterns in a shoe sole that model this manually or even worse manufacture this manually without any cad?

For some time now that I’m looking for something that I can have a detailed control over the displacement geometry and then extract that geometry for real CNC manufacturing but seems that there is nothing for rhino at the moment.
I read somewhere that Rhino should have adaptive tessellation and does not.....

            Thanks

              Re: Puma Shoe

Sergio, some months befor (or years) I play with the Rhinoman|AIR displacment export a little. This was the result. Maybe this is what you are looking for.

Marcus Liebich has done more research at this topic.

              http://news2.mcneel.com/scripts/dnew...m=193355&utag=

              Looks interesting or?

For the rendering: I would choose a more specific lighting, less dark. For neutral looking images I would use a setup that show the shoes at a white ground. So, it can be used at white background webpages or prints without visible edges. Here an example (webside of my wife ):

                Re: Puma Shoe

the original concept was yellow with mices... come on you can model it the same way.

I owned one pair of these bought in barcelona.

The 2nd edition was not that beautiful I think. especially the color inside the holes.

Paraglobal: I don´t know exactly what other people use, but this is my own technic. A combination of Smash and flow along surface. You first model the base surface, then you smash it, after that you can model the texture in the flatten version of your model. A this moment you can use heithment from images, extract displacement, rhinoart or model with traditional nurbs technics. Then you use flow along surface, and having both flat and final surface, the texture fit in the exact place. Hope it helps

Jean-Paul Paloux : Great colour, is perfect for the concept !! thanks

Micha : Thanks for your comments, I remembered this link, but I couldn´t found it on time.
About the lighting, I´ll test your option when I have some time, thanks again.

                    Hi Laborda

Any news about the software that puma has?
I have this really nice magazine article about puma that I want to add some new things about software and post it in my website.

                    Thanks

                      Re: Puma Shoe

Yesterday I sent a mail to Michael Schaeffer, the designer of this shoe. You can see his sketchs in coroflot.
Look what he told me "I was at Puma (left in 2005), not one designer worked on Rhino or any other 3D software. The timelines usually don't allow for that luxury, unfortunately."

I think that the engineer department or the manufacturers then, should use all kind of specific software, but not in the design process.

On the other hand I asked other people at rhino forum, they told me they use powershape

                      www.3dm.cc/bajar/presentaciones/texturas_3D.avi

This kind of interface could be great for us.

                        Re: Puma Shoe

I'm looking for something like that video EXACTELLY

I was looking at the displacement tools in order to have something like that.
In fact some inside voices at Mcneel told me that in the next SR the displacement tool will be a stand alone free add-on and not part or the RDK.

                        Thanks
