  • photo montage - real project2

Another montage - hopefully getting better!
With this one I used sketchup photomatch to set up the correct perspective for the model, then placed a billboard opposite the model with an image of the streetscene, to provide the reflections in the glass. After rendering, I photoshopped the render into the original photograph.

    david,

i love the rendering of the house and also the technique. thanks for sharing. the only thing is the tiling of grass and concrete, the tiling is very obvious.

I agree. I need to sort out the grass and paving, the ones I used are just sketchup textures. I have also changed the car and put in more reflective finishes.

      Thanks

        Nomer

I've been really busy. I traded the car in for a newer, and shiner, model. Relaid the lawn, and found out a lot about grass! It has a bit tricky getting the grass the right green for this British (wet) climate. I also added in some trees (out of view) to give some dappled shadows - it could be a bit more dappled, I think! I decided to leave the 'gravel' alone - it isn't perfect, but you can easily imagine it actually looking like that. I think the 'model' is now sitting in its environment a bit better.

How timely! I spotted Micha's brilliant method for creating (a grass) texture here
          http://www.asgvis.com/index.php?opti...11546#msg11546

so now I have applied it to my montage and hey-presto .... superb grass.

          Thanks Micha

I just have to sort out roof tiling now and the leadwork would benefit from a textured image too as it looks too flat.

Dave, how do you insert jpeg or bmp billboards on the sketchup drawings to cast a reflection on the glass? What menu/tools shall I use? Second, I want to photomatch my sketches but am having a hard time tweaking the wireframes..and it all gets messy when I do.

              Thanks in advance!

I firstly set up a large face opposite the model (draw it in) then 'import' your image and apply it to the face you have created. Adjust the scale of the image etc to suit, and by looking at a plan of the model move the image so that it will reflect in the glass. Depending on which way the sun is casting its shadow you also need to ensure that the image itself doesn't cast a shadow on the model - move it away if it does. You will also see that I have put a large (single sided) rectangular light in front of the image. This is because the sun is not shining on it and it would otherwise be very dull.

As for photomatch - I agree it is fiddly, but it is a whole lot easier than doing it by eye. I don't necessarily get it perfect, but you can usually adjust the finished render in photoshop to get it to fit!

Wow! Thanks for the fast reply david. Great tip! What's on top of the jpeg image? Is that a filter or something? Now, I can do some real testing. Sketchup is a very user friendly program. I can't say much about Vray since mine just expired. I dunno why? Been using it for only 1 week or probably less.

Re: photo montage - real project2

It is the vray rectangular light (not a filter)
I am sure you realise that all this (reflections etc) only works when you render with vray

                    Good Luck

You are right David, it's too late. However, I can take note of your experimentations and apply it in the future. I hope we could find solutions to our error loading problem with Vray for SU.

                      Regards

                      Mike

P.s. Have you used the SU Podium? They said it is a good plugin for SU.

Re: photo montage - real project2

This is how the montage was made-

The sky is the sky from the original photograph (this doesn't exist in the render)

1- you get the perspective matched up using sketchup photomatch
2- set up the reflective 'billboards'
                        3- render
4- Using photoshop (etc) cut out the render and insert it on a layer in front of the original photograph and very carefully adjust its position over the original
5- you may need to adjust size of inserted render
6- tidy-up (maybe soften) the edges of the render layer
7- copy some of the background photograph so that it appears in front of the render (in this particular case, the shrubs on the left and the right in the foreground.

The glass is the same as the one I uploaded to the download section - vismats - glass

You will see from the set-up that I posted in the thread that you do need something to reflect in the glass, otherwise there is no point in doing it.

                        Good Luck

Re: photo montage - real project2-updated

Final Render. Sorted a better texture for the roof and paving and added a few extras, such as internal items, to give it a bit more life.

If you use a textured emitter material instead the textured diffuse, than you need no extra light source.
