  • Kitchen - First post

I thought it about time I posted one of my images. Quite new to all this so I would be pleased to hear any comments or criticism.

    Thanks in advance,

    Phil Thompson.

The light at the bottom is coming through a window. The others are meant to be some little halogens that I normally use under wall cupboards etc. These are like very wide angle spotlights but I don't know how to make the cone wide enough.

I have played with various cone lengths, but beyond a ratio of 10:1 diameter to cone length, the results are about the same.

      Some examples:

      Diameter 10, Cone length 4

      Diameter 10, Cone length 2

      Diameter 10, Cone length 1

      Diameter 10, Cone length 0.5

      Diameter 10, Cone length 0.25

Does anyone know how to simulate a very wide angle spotlight?

I will upload an image of the real thing as soon as my new digi camera arrives. Old one broke last week - typical!

        Re: Kitchen - First post

Just got my new camera today and the following photo is of the halogens I use and the spread of light that I would like to simulate.

Does anyone know the best way to go about it?

Perhaps I should have mentioned, Rhino's own renderer seem to work OK.

Here is a cone, diameter 10, length 4

And here is one diameter 10, length 2

The second Rhino render is the kind of spread from the spotlight that I would like to achieve. Any thoughts anyone?

Hmm...that is wierd. My tests here are showing the same thing...vray reacts to the light cone to a certain point, but for very wide lights it doesn't seem to register. I'll try to come up with a little workaround that will be able to get that kind of wide angle your looking for.

A little off topic, but to my eyes the light doesn't look like it has much decay. Decay, if you don't know, is how much the intensity of the light decreases with the distance it travels. For point lights there are three options for decay: linear(default), inverse, and inverse square. Inverse Square is the physically correct decay, but I will go back and forth between inverse and inverse square (inverse being a little better for interior shots). Beyond that I would also add a little blurriness to the shadows themselves.

dalomar, It would be a great help if this function can be made to work correctly. Kitchens are my business and so almost all my images include these wide angle spots. From the Rhino results it seems a ratio of 5:1 (diameter:cone length) is about right.

I take on board all your suggestions about the light decay and blurriness of the shadows.

              Many thanks

                Re: Kitchen - First post

I have tried putting a rectangular light inside a cylindrical housing, just like the real thing really and I am quite pleased with the results. I don't know if this a common thing to do or if it will be seen as a bodge! The render shows just the one light under the wall cupboard.

                Help and criticism very welcome.
