  • Fusion of classical + modern architecture

This is an ongoing personal experiment of mine : to combine modern and classical architectural styles and elements -- and see what happens. This latest model, "Temple of Pamela," uses the Doric classical style, but I combined it with a modern aluminum curtain wall enclosure.

      Close up detail

In this view, you can see some of the details as well as the reference image plane. Everything is based off of the column diameter in classical architecture, so the height of the building, spacing of columns, etc. are all related to the base column diameter. That's why the proportions are universal no matter what the size or scale.

        Construction strategy

Here you can see the relative simplicity of the geometry. Each beam (entablature) is a fairly simple extrusion. The corners were initially tricky as you can't do any trims or booleans due to their reversal of direction and co-planar faces. I finally figured out a good way by slicing each intersecting entablature beam with a 45 degree corner plane. Bingo! It was a perfect miter corner. I then built the structure from corner to corner for a perfect fit.

The illustration is made possible by the "technical shader," from McNeel at http://en.wiki.mcneel.com/default.as.../TechDraw.html It only works with screen viewports, so you don't render so much as do screen captures. But, it can be a very cool look for diagrammatic illustrations.

Same building, different location in winter

I thought this temple might look cool if it was up in the clouds and looked more mysterious due to the environment and weather. I've also added a front door / entryway.

          Tech notes :
I used this render as a chance to practice compositing.
I tweaked the color balance (curves with blue) of both the foreground render and background photo to capture the mood.
The background was blurred 2 pixels and desaturated to simulate distance and atmosphere.
Other tweaks including increasing the contrast of the temple / foreground and adding 2% noise for a little film grain / texture / atmosphere.
