  • Experiment Exterior Scene

Just a simple scene to test a few things. Car is from Google Warehouse. No real modelling.

I was testing HDRIs, lights, emissive materials and wet road effect. Pure V-Ray render. No post.

If anyone have, or should know of, any nice HDRIs that'd work well with this scene please let me know. I wondering if I might model some simple silhouette of a city in the background.

The wet road effect is very crude. Just a reflection layer with a simple mask of white brush blobs. I want to make a proper one that follows the road's track deformation and pick up the road texture. The road could also do with a bump map, especially to pick up the road marking.

Not quite sure how to make the road light not alias or burn out the lamp post while ensuring the scene's brightness. Any suggestions?

Currently the head lights are just emissive materials, I'd like to model these properly.

Anyone got goo resources for rust and decayed metal? A further development of this scene would be to make the car look worn, as a 30+ year old car would.

I'm guessing this image might look dark on some monitor depending how they're calibrated.

    Full view is 1600x1200

        Nice work.

For rusty metal texture i can recomend 3dtotal textures.
they have pretty good tecture library.

look forward to updated version of the scene.

I have some "rusty's", but I don't know if you can use them on a car...I'll have to check!

                Re: Experiment Exterior Scene

Nearly forgotten about this thread. Thanks for the links guys. I got a good HDRI now. A very nice desert HDRI where I modelled a road with a high res road texture. That worked fine as it took care of the car's shadow on the ground.

stefanq: that article is great. I found it a couple of weeks ago. it's one of the main inspiration for the model I'm doing now. The textuing is taking ages though. old stuff is way much harder than new shiny stuff. And I also picked a model that's too low poly, so I also have to add details to the model where needed.

I wish I could do particles in SU, as I'd like to add some smoke to this scene...

The problem is, we dont have bend material with masks to filter the texture mix. Maby in the future.

All though we don't have a blend material (requested) it's still possible by a series of diffuse layers with opacity maps and off course matching opacity maps for reflections and refractions.

but we have a bend map to mix textures, but we dont have control by masks, only the mix.

Yea, the blend map is no good for this. If it only had an opacity filter...
