    Question re: curve

Micha: great suggestion, but it took me a little while to figure out what you are saying. To confirm, are you saying to make the top-right curve more "S"-shaped; with a similar curve as I have already shown at the bottom-left?

Please confirm and I'll give that a try.

Yes, a S shape could be good. Most I use a flat curve at the upper part only and a little bit shift the lower end. Here an image from my training script.

Flatten the lower part can cause a higher contrast, but if this isn't needed, than I try to keep the middle part of the curve straight linear, only flatten the upper part.

marked field is without curve correction

        Good tip from Micha

Here's where Micha's tip helped me discover another rule : if a scene is improperly lit, then the use of an "S-shaped curve" does not work well... so THATS your cue that you need to balance the lighting. I have some new examples coming up soon.

I'm curious what you find. I don't use the same curve correction allways, often I fine adjust it like it is needed for the rendering.

            New image

The problem I had with some of my earlier gamma-corrected renders was simple over-lighting. This resulted in blow-outs in the lighter detailed areas. The new image above uses an 'S-shaped' correction curve to both adjust the image as well as function as a test for the lighting. By test, I mean that if there is not an 'S' shape required (which varies) then my balance is probably off.

              New Competition

I am using this humble little furniture + surface system as a marketing tool, or more appropriately, a marketing hammer. I've continued to develop and refine the design and it's now entered into another competition; this one sponsored by DWR. In addition, I have started building the first prototype and will be sharing images and progress here, as well as on my new blog (as soon as it is ready.)
