  • Teapot Concept "Oo-oo! Hot hot hot!!"

This design is part of a competition entry for http://www.tea-off.com
The concept was inspired the products of Alessi, who make classic humor- and character-driven housewares.

The basic premise of the design is stoves are hot. So, don't sit on the stove.

    Concept sketch comparison

Besides Rhino and V-ray, this design would not have been possible without T-Splines. This amazing plug-in allowed me to easily 'flow' the surfaces from the primary form into the two side arms. Check them out at http://www.tsplines.com

        Some explanation of T-Splines

Most people have heard of T-Splines, but are not clear on why it is so powerful. First of all, its extremely easy to learn. There are a few new commands, but the interface and functionality are very intuitive and well-integrated with Rhino. Hey, if you figured out V-Ray, you can master the basics of T-Splines in half a day or so.

Two killer features are the following

        1) The ability to add more UVs only where needed. In Rhino (and all NURBS software) all U's and V's are continuous, going completely around the geometry, and getting crazy complicated. T-Splines are powerful "T" junctions, where U's and V's can stop and start ONLY where detail is needed. Truly amazing.

        2) Ability to extrude. Think of the standard polygon-editing strategy, (like in MAX and Maya) but with continuously flowing NURBS surfaces. You can extrude any area or group of areas in any direction. T-Splines also will automatically calculate the average surface normal, so extrusions are as clean as you want.

The following image highlights these two features. I also included the surface--reflection map so you can see the smoothness that results.
