  • MiniMediaCentre - Retro computer case

Render of my Final Major Project from when I studied modelmaking. Originally modelled in Rhino, but remodelled in Sketchup because... well, just because. Struggling with reflections and especially the transparent ribs in the front.

Lovely result Thomas, can u tell us how hard was to grasp the basics of rhino? Sketch up really become an "nerve-racking" for me.

The environment is just a box with rounded edges. If you won't want the V-Ray Sky you have to disable it in the Environment section in the Options. Before SR1.5 the Sky used to be on by default. From SR1.5 it's off be default and you have to manually turn it on. Which version do you use? Sounds like you are using an older version.

I uploaded my studio file here: http://download.thomthom.net/3d/sketchup/DVI.zip
          Made with SU7 and VfSU SR1.5 (1.05.30)

I had used 3D Studio Max a little before I was introduced to Rhino. I used Rhino when I studied for my BA. Rhino is a very fine application. Found it easier to grasp than 3DSMax. I didn't use SU until four years after I first began to use Rhino, so I'm not sure how the experience will be going that way.

But for this model Rhino had the advantage. When I recreated this in SU I constantly had to size up things by 100 time in order to create those little rounded edges. And the front ribs where very easy to do in Rhino, but needed more awkward workaround in SU due to it's problems with faces that's smaller than 1mm.

However, I do think that Bonzai3D will be a very good option to Rhino, especially for people coming from SU. It had a lot of the methods of SU modelling with inference and push/pull, but with the power of NURBS.
