Photoshop sucks for tonemapping. It technically does not have local TMOs only global.
OK, OK I concede! I've only used Photomatix basic (the free one) and assumed that's what we were talking about- my bad. Sorry 40th! I've checked out a few T,T &T on the interweb and it seems there's a more or less total consensus that Photomatix Pro does do a much better job of tone mapping HDRIs better than PS; maybe I should buy it.
Weird thing is though, that I've viewed this thread on 3 separate monitors (1 pretty well calibrated laptop, 2 random library PCs) and sorry to say it but 40th's last image looks flat and a bit washed out to me. The sky especially doesn't look luminous to me; it looks like a flat background, lit by the scene's GI rather than a luminous entity in its own right.
Likewise for Sepo's image- the middle ground appears more brightly lit than the sky itself. Of course it doesn't help that the background has that bright patch in the ploughed field- maybe a little burning and/or desaturation in that area of the background image would help?
Sepo, I've been wondering what's going on with the sphere- did you add reflections to it in PS? It suddenly looks very glossy and like it's reflecting a white VRay infinite plane, but I didn't spot that in the original HDRI.
Jackson, I have not added any gloss to sphere in PShop. The reason why centre of the image is lighter is because I added vignetting.
In real life there is never constant light over surfaces so tonal and colour contrast are essential to bring out that variation.
I think it boils down to personal taste. I was looking at your recent render , BTW very fine render, of the houses in field and IMO your pp is flat , lacking contrast and way blue for my taste. It could be your monitor or it could be simply you like it like that. So to conclude my point is one either likes it or not and than one looks for reasons to jusify it.
talking about making friends huh
Of course it can be adjusted more, but i think it looks more vivid.

It's all good Jackson
This discussion progressing. I agree with sepo that it comes to personal taste. I'm trying to find good way to get wide range of color and shadows/ highlights dynamic in my renders.

This image can be improved, i agree.
Some levels adjustments in ps for that image.
I noticed that the more i make the sky/clouds brighter the ball gets burned (for example look at your image).
Jackson, i appreciate your honesty.
