      If you ask me, object materials are created best in a neutral environment.
      So, in order to achieve a realistic output in a special scene setup, never change an object material! Always adjust the scene (general V-Ray options, GI, background, reflexion map, lights, backdrop material).

        Another way to create a fading background is to draw a flat square as groundplane and apply a circular fade mapping to it's diffuse transparency layer (and reflexion layer, if applicable).
        Then it just blends to the background colour.

        ...just saying...

        Of course, this is not ideal for low or straight horizontal camera angles.
