  • Exterior Scene in Progress

    I am running into trouble when adding textures to large spaces, how can i go about doing this...any ideas?

    Looks good, but be careful with the depth of field, it easily starts to look like a miniature street

    What do you mean "running into trouble", could you please be more specific?
    I would make textures for the different parts, 1 texture for the asphalt/street, 1 texture for one side of a building etc.

      yea, DOF is risky business. using physical camera, it's controlled via f-stop value: larger numbers cause less effect (always to be balanced with shutter speed, of course).

        sorry to not be more specific. the question is when i start applying materials for each individual part of the model, street, sidewalks, buildings... since they are such large surfaces the textures start looking repetitive. is it that i have to texture map the surfaces very carefully? or is there a way to create textures for larger spaces without seams/repetive effect.

        also, i see what you guys mean about the miniature street. ill make sure i keep the dof to a minimum (no worries with render times since i just used the zdepth in post production).

          ah, now I see...

          well, with architectural textures you can build up large space maps in Photoshop, but keep the resolution at a minimum.
          First, get the biggest file you can get to have a variety of things going on on it.
          Then, use Photoshop or the like to array it as needed and edit the seams with the tools provided in the software (Clone Stamp, Smudge, Sponge, etc.). Be creative and mirror, scale, and add cracks or dirt on separate layers. Also tools like Dodge and Burn add to a non-repetitive structure.

          I quickly googled "creating seamless textures" and found this simple tutorial:

          It's not perfect, but you get the idea

          If you need things like markings on the pavement, it'll be an option to draw them in Rhino, export the ground plan to Photoshop and create another layer within your street material from this image.

          It's always a good idea to stop by at Arroway's just to get a glimpse of how large textures could look like and what dimensions they should have (http://www.arroway-textures.com/en/p...ete-1/contents).

          Anyways, it's always hard work to get a good result. But have a look at Micha's work and breath some perfectionist air!

            great! it seems like a lot of the work is going to be during post production and having multiple layers of renders (zdepth, shadows, roads...). I appreciate the replies and really helpful links.

                  hey, it's looking good, i tried once to do this and i couln't achieve it. did you scale models? or do they have the same they're original size?

                    yea the models are to scale, the effect comes from the depth of field which makes it look like a physical model.
