  • Yeah, but can you render cars? Huh, can you?

I had a weird exchange with a potential client. They said, "We love all of your stuff and range of skills... but can you render cars?" I never thought that cars were some sort of unique subset of render-able objects.

Here's a bad analogy that I love so I use it way too often : A client calls a still-life fine art painter for a project. The client tells the painter, "We love all of your work, especially your recent paintings of of fruit, but we're going to go with someone else who has more vegetable experience."

Anyways, here's a quick test I did with a freebie model.

      You got me...

I can only do trucks with 17 or fewer wheels, driving north, and painted red. Anything else, I am clueless.

Hi, it look very well ;D You can definitely rendering cars.
          Disadvantages are :
          * AA filter - the all vision is very sharp. Maybe you should soften it.
          * tires of the car is not good visible.
          * refflections - maybe you should try with other HDRI.
          * composition - maybe you should move the car to the left.

Nice rendering, but it shows too, that rendering cars isn't easy, the reflections dosn't support the shape, are to chaotic (for example the front) ... so, can you realy render cars?

I think, cars and jewelry are both not easy to render, because the right reflection environment must be found. A good studio environment and real time render engine could be very helpful.

Would global reflection and refraction helps rendering cars?

about real time rendering engine, does vray for su have one?

Well, it was a 2 hour test. I did use a HDRI image for both lighting and environmental reflection map, but V-Ray should make those easier to use. You can never tell how the reflections will look until after you render -- and then you have to rotate both maps and re-render/ repeat / etc. It would be nice to have an easier way to quickly test and adjust those two map settings.

petrov and master micha has nice points
you may also improve glass material, too transparent right now
shadows/reflections on the floor is missing

additionally modeling a car is not easy
if you are not a master level car modeler among few people the reflections will not turn out good
side and front reflections fine however the bumper and headlight parts show great defects

on the other hand nice render, schultze actually works and keeps improving

master micha and petrov can you please critique my design and renders too, I may try to improve my designs next week

                    One more note

I did not use any texture maps, but the model could definitely use a few, especially on the tires. I know there are some rough edges, but the geometry is a polygonal freebie model that I found online in ten minutes. I was not able or interested in modifying anything beyond the license plate.
