  • Latest Vehicle Renderings

i finally managed to get this finished, seems the last little bit dragged out for 2 weeks when most of it had been done in a weekend.

The paint materials look flat in some images, and there's a few little errors that i could correct in each image, but was happy enough to put it down for the moment. planning to do a night shot at some point soon, although it'll be in a city not the desert.

Almost default Vray 1.48.66 settings for rendering. materials are all very basic, only a few bump / texture maps, and i couldn't be bothered with multi-layer reflections for metallic paint and all that sort of thing at the moment, may make some adjustments for the night shot though.

hope the images aren't too large on here.

wow, great images, it would be great if you could add some dirt to the tires

wow! so grea. i love seeing other visualization then architecture and design. (nothing against it, its what i do for a living)

But cars, prototypes and things like this are great to see once in a while.

Some are more convincing then others in this set. But this is certainly a great start!

What were the render times (approximately) on 2,5,6. The up close engine ones.

And did you design that engine from scratch!?

      Really enjoyed this set.

Please keep posting. It helps show the versatility in Sketchup

          Re: Latest Vehicle Renderings

          thanks folks.

I'm afraid i can't remember the rendering times, i usually save a copy of the image with the little vray info bar at the bottom of it but i forgot this time round, i think the front view image only took about 15 mins after parsing, on a Core i7 cpu.

The closeup engine shots were quite a bit longer, probably stretching into about an hour or so, all at 2300x1080 pixels. the DoF was done by saving the Z-Depth map and applying it in photoshop. all had Ambient Occlusion on, that seems to add a bit of time, but well worth the final effect.

designed the engine myself from scratch, no realism to it at all, just fun and a shape that i liked. i did a cylinder as i wanted something different to the good old v shaped engine. which is what i had in my first blocking out model.

                  Re: Latest Vehicle Renderings

                  thomthom, stats are:

                  Edges: 493356
                  Faces: 219056
                  Component Instances: 896
                  Groups: 46
                  Component Definitions: 89
                  Layers : 13
                  Materials 21

the file can be a bit heavy to work with unless the layers are managed as you're modelling, the tyres are a real killer, with all those rounded grooves and 64 segments around, but they're something that can be switched off most of the time while modelling.

the file can have it's hiccups when rendering, occasionally it'll begin parsing the file and then just sort of stop and revert back to sketchup as though you hadn't hit the render button, but a restart of sketchup seemed to solve that issue each time. and i had to force a material sync at one stage too. nothing too major.

it still seems to be a fairly stable file, but how much longer that would last if i continued adding details and rounded edges to it i don't know. parse times are not too bad, but i haven't timed it precisely.

                    Sweeeeeet! Very seemingly palpable too!

That floor texture, is it on an infinite plane? I thought that it's not possible to apply textures to infinite planes.

I think you'll have a better experience with the patch when it's released.

Decent model size, but I expected at least that when I noticed all your soft corners. They do give you that final realism though. Very nice work on your materials.

                      Interesting design as well.

I Didn't think so too until last week when I found a post on here about it, you apply the texture to the infinite plane group, and the you have to set the UVW mapping of that texture it UVWPlanarWorld, and adjust the x, y and z repeat, i had them each set at .01, the size of the texture map is set to 2000mm x ~2000mm in sketchup.

You got more projects like this?
not really, there's a few other renderings and bits and pieces on my deviantart page(ohfive30.deviantart.com), but i think i've posted most of the vray for sketchup images here before.

Really? I personally much prefer the close ups. The detail is amazing! I think you should elaborate on what needs improving.

                            Thanks ohfive30 for the tip.

I second that - just saying it need improvement is rather vague.
