  • Bedroom and Introduction

Hi guys, first off - happy new year! New to the forums.

I have just started to learn VfSU, after reading and watching many tutorials from people like arqesteves, nomeradona, fernando etc and observing other renders from fellow newbies to the pros (which has really helped me in this first try of mine). I must say, vray got me addicted, hope this doesn't ruin my time management for school haha
So to start off with this learning I decided to renovate my bedroom - using SU and vray.

    There goes my first render.

I tried using IES for the track and recessed lightings, but I couldn't get them to work. I imported the IES I downloaded from GE/Lithonia but no lights would generate. Forced me to use omni lights as a substitute, hence giving me those light leaks, didn't fix them cause I was excited to finally have a final render (which also stopped me from fixing those cloudy surfaces around the aircon). :P

Questions I have are that when using models from archive3d and with considerably more detail than usual (books etc):

Is there a way to reduce the file size (apart from purging) and parsing time? It takes forever to save the scene, even if I tried layer hide and switch to hidden frame/monochrome.

Does smoothing the surface of the high poly models have any impact on file size? I know they do help to speed up the viewport though.

Comments and critiques are definitely welcomed, hope to learn more from the people in this forum.
    Thanks!

Nice first full render! It obviously could be improved a lot, but good start!
Regarding the smoothing question, no it does not impact on size, it only helps moving in the viewport. When using 3ds models, you should really use a plugin called cleanup (on sketchucation somewhere) to clean all the unnecessary lines, it decreases edge count a lot, however my biggest advice would be to model as much as you can in sketchup. For example the books, simple shapes like books, bed frames, painting frames, etc should be modelled in sketchup and turned into components when you need more than one in the scene. That will dramatically improve the scene as sketchup made models won't have unnecessary lines and things (And improve your 3d modelling skills).

      Thanks a lot

The plugin is a great help, I am now as well scouring the sketchucation forums to improve my modeling. I have been looking at other works to get ideas of better lighting, mapping etc, and truly they are inspiring.

Now if only the new year's vacation were longer...
