  • VRay Displacement

    This turned out to be a pretty cool test so I thought I'd share it with you guys.

    The geometric object you see below is a simple grid plane with a basic 288 triangles. This has been rendered with global illumination lighting in combination with traditional lighting techniques and VRay Area shadows. The original was rendered at 2240x2240. Unfortunately, evident artifacting is present due to high JPEG compression.

          if the original image has enough contast you could try to vectorize it, then make a huge bitmap, out of the scaled vector. THen use gaussian blur 1,5-2 then you will have a smooth displacement.
          Otherwise I think its just looks great! I dont mind the grainy stuff on it.

              very nice test richard

              I would like to ask a question about displacement

              when i paint in photoshop a grayscale image (just some black or white airbrush drawing on 128 gray background) i have some noisy displacement in vray (2d or 3d disp are the same) and not smooth displacement . is what it's too precise ?
              do you have this kind of problem?



              this is a test I did with a simple sphere and a map (500*500) paint in photoshop.
              displacement 2d resolution is 1024 but it's the same with a 512 or in 3d.

                Richard I have being trying to do exactly this the other day, to no success.
                you wouldnt give a little more insight into lights and the quality of displacement map used, a screen grab or ..........look what you want when you can.

                      Mik,

                      I'm not sure if your still interested, but I think what you are experiencing is Photoshop's 8-Bit dithering. Remember, using 8-Bit you only have 256 shades of grey.
                      When u have to do this amount of displacement, you should consider using 16-Bit textures.

                        Hey nuts.

                        Yeah, unfortunately the original photo was quite grainy which (in part) contributes to the bumpyness. Someone suggested vectorizing the image and posterizing it down to maybe 16 shades which would get rid of a lot of the noise - I've just been lazy lately...

                          nice test Richard!

                          mik: did you save the texture as JPG? Jpg compression can add noise like that. Also, make sure the displacement texture isn't too low res.

                            Richard, I'm trying to create an effect similar to this. Is there any way you could post the image (or even part of the image) used to create this displacement? I don't even know wher to start in photoshop for somthing this complicated. TIA.
