  • Carpet WIP- displacement

    Hi,
Here is my first try with vrays displacement feature.
Its Gustav Klimt design carpet, as a displacement I used celular procedural texture from MAX ( I have to reduce the cells a little to get softer solution)...

...BUT!!!! What bugs me is that the carpet is flying!!!! Even if its placed on the floor surface, another thing, I want to get some thickness not just displaced plane...HOW DO I DO THAT!!!! (I was thinking about adding a rounded pipelike object around the plane with a fibre like texture), but I suppose there must be some other way around....Any hints or ideas???

Please guys help me on this one!!!

Try to turn off max displacement at the render dialogue...

looks really good - even if it's flying

To achieve thickness i always use a chamferbox, be sure to put a meshsmooth modifier in it to prevent detaching faces.

Got a problem, when I use as a displaced object chamfered box, I get slightly displace, almost flat surface...is that a matter of UVMAPPING?
I use planar, since its flat carpet.....any suggestions?

Just added few details into the texture and refined the subdivision, still this i just a plane....

The carpet looks good....and the floor is great! The texture did you use is a free texture, a commercial texture (like Dosch, Marlin or so...) or your creation?

              thx

Uao!! Thanks, amazing quality render, very clean GI and nice materials

Thank you for sharing the floor mat

                      Unfortunately for me...DAMN LONG , I got very weak computer...only 1.4 Athlon...on 0.5 gig ram.

So everything that I render takes sooooooooooooooo long.....this one gets finished in about 2 hours...I did not measure it though.

                      Thanks for nice replies...

I am having troubles with using this on 3d object such as chamfered box....any ideas how to set uv mapping for this one??? I always get washed out displacement...terrible...

yeah mapping chamfer boxes are abit tricky...not sure sorry

oooo yeah make sure you use 3d mapping for the displacement.

I ve tried all sorts of things but it always turns out bad...never mind though, Ill just put the plane 0.01cm above the floor and I suppose that should deal with my flying carpet....displacement gives it enough thickeness in my opinion....

                          ...thanks for reply though...

                          Best regards

if you want to give the carpet a look of thickness, you could try this.
On your displacement map have a 1-5 pixel black band that goes all the way around the edge, that would make the very edges of the mesh not displace and this giving it the look of having some thickness.

try it out and see if it works.

Thanks that could work, but I suppose first of all I would wave to render out that cell procedural shader that I use for displacement as a plane, than process this in Photoshop to give it extra black edge and than use it as a regural bitmap texture...I ll try that whenever I have some spare time...right now I am working on a living room couch, so that ll take a while..., but I ll post the result whenever I render all this together.

                              Thank for help
