I used it as another chance to play with vray and get to know it a little more.

I have quite a few questions that I will post in the other sub forums mainly regarding sampling and passes.

    Thanks,

    Rich

Really nice work, Richard! Is there a color version of the rendition that we can appreciate?
        always curious...

Love the image, Richard. What's your workflow after render in VRay? Did you output a lot of render elements or it's done mostly tweaked and done in Maya directly as one beauty pass? Where and how did you color correct it and add the lens effects?
              always curious...

                Hey Jason,

A lot was done is post in regards to the "look" of the image.

It was not possible to get a proper beauty pass as we could not find one position for the dome light that reflected great on all parts of the car. So we rendered a few rotation alternatives and took the best parts of those to create the environment reflection. These alternate reflections were rendered as seperate render layers with layer overides for the dome light hdr placement node and in the dome light, diffuse and spec were overidden to off.

In the master layer we created a few light select render elements. One for the dome light, the lights on the wheels, extra underlight for the bumper grill and one for the main front grill. Also geometry lights were created for the headlights and fog lights to emit light from.

The lens effects were added in post. We have a library of shot lens flares we use and and on top.

Other render elements I rendered was a normal pass which we use to select areas of the car in photoshop so that we can lift in post to define shape more if needed.

Also a shadow pass and occlusion shadow pass. These were seperate render layers.

Not sure if you can render these as actual render element passes. We always switch the primary visibility of the car off for these passes and not sure if that is possible to get from the main image where the car is visible in all the other passes.

Then along with that a load of multi mattes for the various parts of the car.

If you want anymore info then let us know.

                Best,

                Rich

Thanks for the breakdowns, Richard. Especially the one that you use normal pass for enhancing details in post, something I haven't learned before. Make me really want to stop what I am working on and experiment with it.

                  cheers,
                  Jason
