    Hiya,

I has been a struggle to model a Nokia 5100.. but I'm getting there!
At the moment busy with the buttons, first I decided to map the buttons but that wasn't a good plan, so I have to model the numbers and symbols.

    Leon

Nice. Just to give my few thoughts on this ...

      1. Not sure, but the skin seems to be a little too thin IMO.

      2. The materials need more work as well (i.e. reflections, graininess, etc.).

      3. At the moment, it is quite visible that the screen is nothing more than a map. Maybe model some actual plexiglas over the image, and add to it a selfillmuinated material as well. Finally, I suggest to do some work in your image editor to make the texture look slightly pixelated even if in reality they wouldn't be as visible.

      Otherwise, nice modeling and illumination.

      Regards,

      Nenad

thx Nenad, you're right, although some details got lost with the rescale from 3500 pixels wide to 1000 pixels wide and jpeg compression.

I agree with Nenad, the yellow ochre skin seams to float on the white. You should be able to use the Solidify plugin to help with this. The modeling is going good otherwise

All of the materials are very similar. If this is the look your going for you could still add some slight differences in the specular reflections. Actually you should add specular reflections it seems as if there are none.

The images you've used are not suited for a close-up rendering like this well. If you do a search with Google using their “Images” tab you can probably find a better image of the hands. Look close at the “#1” button. Whatever the icon beside “1” is has a different off white than the button material. I think it may be the same for the others too. What is your lighting setup?

            thx Jon,
To be honest I didn't pay much attention at all to the materials & lighting setup , too busy getting the model right before moving on.

About the orange ochre skin floating above the white, I noticed that too.. but I wasn't able to model it the right way, but as you mentioned I should use the solidify plugin, thx for the tip , first I have to find it.

I've got the Solidify plugin, but it doesn't work in max5.1, strange because this plugin is listed under max5 plugins..

But i've got a new idea for the "shell"

                    You lucky man!..
I put the plugin in the right directory and after that it should work, pretty simple.. I even restarted my system.

Here is the link for the author's page: http://www.gravitonic.com/software/3dsmax/downloads.php

It should go into your ../3dsmax5/plugins directory. It will show up as a modifier.

                        So what's the new idea?

Is the plugin not even showing up with the other modefiers?

I've got the solidify plugin working now..... and it's a great tool!, now the shell has thickness and the model is improving!

off-topic: today I bought the new LOTR Two Towers special edition dvd box with a little Gollum yesyesyes

No time to model right now, have to see all the new LOTR material first..
