I also prefer the sharper, grittier detail of image one.

For improvement I think the ambient light could stand to be a bit more cold to contrast the warmth of the artificial light.

here is a subtle tweak. I warmed the image, and painted away the warm glow.

I second the comment about the colder ambient color.
And tow other things came to my mind when looking at the image:
- turn some lights on behind the windows?
- maybe close the sunshades at night?
