    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Ever since I saw these lamps I've been kinda obsessed with trying to replicate them in 3d! Dezeen » Blog Archive » Molecules by Aqua Creations and Ilan Garibi

The geometry of the shade proved to be a bit of a technical challenge. Firstly trying to break down how the folds were constructed, then trying to model the whole thing at once, and finally tweaking a single wedge which was then arrayed round.

I struggled too with the texturing as neither falloffs nor vray dirt were giving me the look I wanted. In the end I unwrapped the whole thing, base and shade and hand painted the folds and dirt myself. I think this gives it a much more natural look.

My next step will be to model the various heights in the family of lamps, from table to standard floor size.

That's very good. I'd love to have the time to get down to that level of detail. I'd be interested to see an image of the hand-painted map.
    Kind Regards,

Thanks, it was rather a labour of love! Spent far too much time trying to get it right The texturing isn't actually that complex, preparing the UV layouts was the hard part (for me, anyway). The lampshade has a tiled paper texture I got off the web with the painted seams on top inside a composite map set to colour burn. The 'light on' version is a 2-sided version which also has some self-illumination via a blend material.

Here's a view of the map plus some wires.
