  • Underworld - Awakening

    Hi,
here are some stills from our work on Underworld - Awakening.
There was also a lot of other Vray rendered stuff, like Fume, a lot of breaking glass etc., but I thought i'd share the set-extensions and a still of a full cg shot of ice growing. Alltogether we worked on roughly 150 shots.
Project was shot on Red Epic in 5k stereo, post-production on 2.5k.
    Hope you like it.
    Best regards,
    Michael

Thanks a lot for your replies and appreciation!
As a sidenote, production time for those shots was quite short. So we just went with some stills from concept to final look, fortunately got all approved, and the sequence with final shaders and light was just rendered once - the first and final rendering. No render errors, a bunch of passes like point position, mattes and normals, uvs for stmaps, all as 32bit exrs helped to finetune everything in nuke that wasn't top notch straight out of the renderer.
I remember the times when achieving photorealism was the hardest part of the production. Those times are gone

I will try to link a qt with some other shots and making ofs soon!

            Best regards,
            Michael

First I must say Kate Beckinsale is a Goddess and I'd love to work with images of her all day long ! More to the point your work is great I never suspected those scenes were 3D at all! Please post some more I love seeing this stuff.

Grate work Michael. It's funny but when I saw this movie a wanted to know how the sequence with window slowly cracking was created? I guess now I can ask you
                  How was it done?

                    Hi again!

@Luke: there's no big secret behind the glass cracks, but quite some handwork in compositing. It was one prerendered image, and the cracks got revealed in comp. As this happens very fast, it's basically like "switching on" new parts of the cracks. The more difficult part was to choreograph the right timing and form to make it look real.

@Devin: We also did the escape out of the cryotank in the beginning - one of our tasks was to remove all of Kate Beckinsales underwear - just to cover her with smoke and ice again . One guy was spending two month matchmoving her body to be able to completely retexture her. I don't dare to tell wether he still felt like working with plates of her all day long in the end...

@all: thanks again for the nice comments and we didn't forget about the QTs, just need to make sure what exactly we're allowed to show etc... (see above).

                    Best regards,
                    Michael

At last, we managed to get our new site up and running, project list is not really up to date yet. But it is featuring an Underworld - Awakening making of reel here:
