  • VFX on "Black Gold"

    Hi,
Here some VFX i did on "Black Gold" at Duran Duboi (RIP).
I did all lookDev/lighting/rendering (with a coworker, we are 2 for this). We were ~10 in the 3D team.
All rendered with Vray for Maya.
    Some objects scattered with Houdini.
Rendered in 4k, 70/80 million of polygons (full 3D with textures, no camap)

Sorry for the size of the image (click on the image for full res):

    A little video :

Perhaps i will do a better video/breakdown/article/detail if i have time.

Thanks for posting this! Is the lighting setup on the city pretty simple?

Amazing work. What kind of render time and memory usage are you seeing for something of that complexity? Did you render those in a single pass?

        Thanks

Yes, a directional light for the sun, and an environment override with a ramp for the sky.

Render time ~1h30 by frame in 4k, all in proxy (with some objects from Houdini) and textures in exr tiled/mipmapped.
First, we baked a irradiance map on 1 frame with "use camera path" setted, on a computer with 45giga ram.
After, we rendered on the renderfarm with computers which have 24giga ram.

For the city, like 3 months.
