  • Galley Kitchen

    Here's a kitchen I'm working on, and I thought I would share.

Below is what usually come out of our kitchen design department. Mind you, this is a $30,000.00 galley kitchen. We are a Crystal Cabinet distributor, and they are some pricey cabinets. I think a $30,000.00 kitchen warrants a better illustration.

nice, but a couple of comments for improvement: Your wood uv mapping needs work (I'm looking at the frame in particular), and for legibility, the chair in front of the sink is distracting.

I tried to get the grain accurate, and spent about an hour doing it. The grain follows correctly, for the most part. What are you seeing? I put the chair there, to block the sink, that isn't accurate.

Yeah, the doors look like they are correct, but the grain flows across the frame, and most places is perpendicular to what I would expect. Visually, the grain seems too high contrast as well.

I see, you're hiding the sink

Yes. I got lazy with that. The model cam from Revit, and I had to model things over it. I didn't remodel the frames

            Bobby,
Your renders have been taking a step backward, if you don't mind me saying. You've gone all crazy with your photoshop filters recently and I'm not a fan. If you're carving a special nitch for your client's that only you can do, then ok. I'll concede. However, I find your "Park Shelter" render more intriguing and interesting to look at than your other newer stuff. I won't pretend to know what your clients want . I'd like to see you do this render and do it without your high pass filters and such, see what everyone thinks. You're definitely getting more into illustration and while interesting it's often lacking depth and realism. I know you won't take this the wrong way, but I did want to say I enjoy your work, and your thoughtful comments and additions to our community, I just want to see it sans filters.

I'm a fan of your work, Colin, so no offense taken. What exactly do you not like about the Galley Kitchen renderings? I only used a few filters, one being a tonal contrast filter, which is the one that might bother you.

I, while typing, looked back at it, and realized my initial reaction to disliking it was incorrect. My gut reaction didn't care for it, now, it doesn't bother me as much as it did initially. The far wall's grainy-ness is bothering me. It looks like you're using a mitchell-netravali (sp) AA filter or something really heavy on edge enhancing effects.

I like this site for reference: http://www.westelm.com/

This isn't a great example, but here's something I found:

There's a smoothness (walls) and a roughness here (textured basket and wood). This is creating a visual contrast in the image, where yours has an even graininess everywhere.

Your composition is good, your lighting is good. What's the raw look like (maybe with just some curves or something or a bit of CC before filters?)

I'd add that all of the wood matching so well is also hurting the image. It's just too consistent. The chairs, floor, and cabinets all match a bit too perfectly. Since your chairs are foreground and out of focus, I'd try a darker tone at first and then maybe a lighter pine color. just more thoughts.

I wouldn't spend 30k on that kitchen....No matter what type of wood they use, It's not worth it....You can get much better looking kitchen with Ikea cabinets. 1/6 of the price....maybe the price includes Union workers to install them.
(4X more time, 4x more breaks, 4x more coffees and cigarettes than a Non-union worker.)
                      show me the money!!

here are other kitchens we have designed and built. http://www.nor-sonideagallery.com/#/album/d3fa7w Some of these cost more than the cost of an average house.

13/66 is really nice. But I would definitely get, but I'd build it myself.
