    hi flipside.
i always used a falloff map in the reflection slot to achieve the effect you described as fresnel. what is the difference and what would you say is better?

I also usually use a falloff map to achieve this. But I don't use the frensell option in the falloff map. I use perp/parrallel and adjust the curve and the two color slots. This way you'll have much more control over the reflections. Thanks to suurland because I got this method from him by studying a wineglass scene he posted on the fr forum long time ago! It's also better because you can adjust the look of the reflections without having to change the IOR of the material.

I only use the fresnell checkbox in testing scenes when I just want to set up a material really quick.

I gave it a try as well, still have to learn a lot about VRays settings.
used interpolated glossy refraction and direct glossy reflections.

              Nice renders guys.

Gijs: Your reflections on the semi-transparent material are a bit too strong, turn them down a little bit.
Are you working with light planes instead of hdri?

I'll take a picture of the original object to show you how the lighting/reflections works on the materials so you can tweak it some more.

Hi Cer, here is an update, reduced the reflections for the glossy part.
I was using three VRay lights.

Gijs, i think something went wrong in your mesh conversion from rhino because some parts look really sharp when they actually should be rounded.

Yes, I noticed that too but my focus was on the materials/Vray and I didn't want to do that part over. I modified the Rhino file btw, to make it a single closed polysurface (except for the air-bubble). My question is though if this is really necessary, because I'm not sure if I can see refraction errors in your and Cer's renderings...but I was expecting so with intersecting geometry.

Well, I also remodeled it to be a closed mesh . In cer's render you don't notice it because of the blur I think.

What material did you use for the air-bubble? and do we have to flip the normals of this one in order to work properly? I am still confused how this works in VRay.

I used exactly the same material for the bubble as I did for the smooth plastic. You need to flip the faces of the bubble to get the correct effect.

I am more confused about the options in the vraymaterial like double sided and reflect on backside etc, as these do not do the things I would expect from their names...

                              mooi mooi

                              Nice one!

Too bad the air bulb isn't realy showing in your render, but it's still nice.

I'm still tweaking my materials an testing some hdri's to get some good reflections, I'll post some results when I'll be happy with them and that might just take some time as I 'should' be studying for my exams.

Could you post your light setup, because that's something I still need to experiment with. I would really appreciate it.
